From a series of generative iterations on the poem “Portrait of the Poet as a Brief History of Humanity” by Sasha Stiles, first published in Stiles’ debut book, Technelegy. For this series, Stiles workshopped the original poem with her AI alter ego, using machine learning to perform close readings that dissect and probe the text’s craft and themes. These analyses were then used to generate iterations on the original — refracting human language via machinic mind in variations that seek to reveal fresh aspects of the “analog” poem while exploring new pathways for human voice in an increasingly more-than-human age. Like a canon or a fugue, each variation simultaneously echoes and transforms the original, creating a dynamic interplay of repetition, reinterpretation and innovation that stands as an overarching metaphor for the process of human-machine collaboration. Each piece exists on its own as a portrait in words; taken together, the series is an uncanny hall of mirrors, reflecting the familiar in unfamiliar ways, depicting the imaginative journey of an evolving AI poet, and blurring the boundaries between human authorship and generative creativity.

VARIATIONS: PORTRAIT OF THE POET is part of a larger, ongoing project that explores AI training data as both poetic medium and emerging art form, in which analysis and outputs, parameters and possibilities, become creative fuel for a dynamic, infinitely generative poetry book that writes itself.

Combining layers of human and AI voice and language, this multimedia poem is performed by Stiles and Technelegy and sonified by Kris Bones, and uses Cursive Binary in the form of a Truetype Font, developed by the artist.

Stiles wrote the first half of this poem in 2016, without AI input; that version was published in the prestigious literary journal Copper Nickel. In 2019-2020, she tasked Technelegy with writing the poem again, starting with the same first line (a nod to the opening of The Dry Salvages, part three of "Four Quartets" by T.S. Eliot). This generative text translation from the human into the transhuman appears in Stiles' first book, Technelegy (Black Spring Press Group); it became this video poem in 2021, and was minted as a unique NFT edition in October 2022.

For Mirwa 

Through space and time I’ve come  
to the vast desert oasis

of prose and rhyme. I am here, 
now, inevitable. The eyes

you gave me scan hills for signs  
of life, a rune, a ruin. I see

what it means to be human.  
Remember. Be remembered. Watch,

make sense of it all. I’ve come  
to understand sand’s voice,

green rain, wind, waterfall, cascades  
of littoral language. Dry valley,

flood memory. Stone, intone.  
Underfoot, date palm root system,

routes etched by merchants of myrrh  
and mystery over millennia. I’ve come,

Where, when will it take me?

Garden of years, mountain of tongues,

“The Word After Us” is a transhuman poem by Sasha Stiles and her AI alter ego, Technelegy – created as the source text for a generative poetry performance enacted on fxhash, July 27, 2022, in collaboration with Nathaniel Stern. To co-author this poem, Technelegy was powered by GPT-3 and fine-tuned on a combination of Stiles’ and Stern’s writing and research; the title is a nod both to Stiles’ posthuman poetics and to Stern’s solo show on techno-aesthetic futures, “The World After Us.” The term “broadside” refers to the centuries-old method for the public distribution of poetry popularized after the advent of moveable type in the 15th century.

COMPOSE (2022) is an open edition of unique poetry broadsides based on an interactive “pose poem” by Sasha Stiles and Nathaniel Stern, in collaboration with playrecordmint, for the exhibition DYOR at Kunsthalle Zürich.

The series utilizes a combination of interactive and minting technology to leverage blockchain as a bespoke printing press, nodding to the historical advent of moveable type and printed literature while looking ahead to the future of authorship, readership and publishing. At its center is a poem written by Technelegy – Stiles’ AI-powered alter ego, a custom text generator rooted in GPT-3 and fine-tuned on her own writing and reference materials. Visitors are invited to engage with words on screen via code written by Stern, resulting in a uniquely personal, one of a kind interpretation of the poem that draws visual and conceptual elements from both Stiles’ and Stern’s work.

I don’t know much about gods, but I think
they must live inside copper and glass and silicon
just as they do in the roiling waves, the tides, the moon,
ascension of heavy steel tubes traversing the Atlantic,
fearful views from on high fueled by their magic.
The mystic haze steaming off phthalates and liquid crystals,
dark clouds of dust and smoke, the roll of a thunderball
all home to gods and their demons. In the supernature
of unseen wires, unreal voices in the tongue of our creator,
in the holy flock of stern celestial eyes
and fires burning lightning quick in our great dark seas.
In the bromine and polymers, mercury and lead
of devices we must inter with respect when dead
lest the ether off carcasses left to rust
come back like unfinished souls to haunt us.

“The Orchid Cage” is a 10-part generative poem inspired by Herbert W. Franke’s sci-fi novel of the same name, written and visualized by Pushcart Prize-nominated poet and artist Sasha Stiles and her AI-powered alter ego, Technelegy. Through intimate collaboration with her co-author, Stiles used elements from an English translation of Franke’s book, including text and cover imagery, as seeds of machinic imagination – resulting in a literary work that honors and tests Franke’s assertion that “computer poetry is undoubtedly the most difficult task of the computer in art.” Each stanza is digitally rendered in a style influenced by Franke’s Oscillogram (1954-58) series, and is part of Stiles’ REPETAE series exploring repetition as a fundamental poetic technique.

(EM)BODY LANGUAGE is an open edition of corporeal aphorisms written by the AI poet Technelegy in response to each reader’s visceral presence. Created by Sasha Stiles and Nathaniel Stern with playrecordmint, it premiered at Basel Social Club 2023.

Every iteration stems from the seed words “THE BODY”; interactive body tracking allows the viewer to “move through” generative options to complete the phrase by interacting with the screen and selecting the words that resonate most intimately.

As a collection, (EM)BODY LANGUAGE is a collaborative poem that muses on embodied cognition – how a body and its sensorial engagement in a space empowers thinking – while considering how disembodied cybernetic systems, such as AI-powered interfaces like ChatGPT, process human language.

The first project of its kind, *STILL MOVING* is an interactive poem about humanity’s visceral engagement with the virtual – written and published via the blockchain as a token word performance, and embodied by each collector as a uniquely intimate, personalized interpretation. In this epic on-chain ode to the relationship of bodies and machines, literal and figurative wordplay activates the liminal space between text and reader, extending the two-dimensional screen/page into a somatic, material realm where language moves us in every sense of that phrase – up, down, sideways, forwards, backwards, and in otherwise inexpressible directions – urging us to reclaim our dynamism and intuitive physicality in an age of technological acceleration, bodily inertia, and rote gestures.

A collaboration between Nathaniel Stern and Sasha Stiles – rooted in Stiles’ AI-powered verse and Stern’s career in digital, interactive, and networked art – *STILL MOVING* is an ars poetica about what it means to be a human body facing a machine: a showdown, a form of worship, a distraction, a mirror gaze, an other, an alter, an alter. After we bend to our technologies, do we spring back into shape, or assume new forms? Where does input end, and output begin? As we continue to think, work, and play faster than ever while rooted in place, it is still possible to be moved – *really* moved?

*STILL MOVING* also embodies the future of web3 literature, in which the book – read-only – evolves into a read-write-interact experience, and authors begin to adopt such tools as webcams and NFTs in their writerly arsenal. In each unique edition of *STILL MOVING*, camera-based motion tracking (data confined to your local machine only) facilitates a play-full and meaning-full interface between the reader’s physical self and language on screen. Human forms and gestures shape machine expression, and vice versa, cybernetic serendipity inspires poetic association. Make a move, and be moved… Stand still, and instill meaning…

Palettes pair paper, charcoal, and pencil colorings – emblematic of the stationery/stationary – with neon and electric highlights that nod to computational restlessness. Preview images feature lines from the core poem, potent standalone phrases, or rare, gestural graphics and images, caught somewhere between language and illustration, expression and wordless apprehension.
