Fueled by inspiration, you poured blood, sweat, and tears into manifesting what had formed in your mind's eye.

How many days have passed?  How much sleep did you lose?

Immersed in the creative flow, time loses meaning.  It's catching up with you now.  Fast.  You sit back and take a deep breath.  The adrenaline coursing through you fades, no longer needed, and fatigue starts to wash over you.

Sleep approaches.  You offer no resistance.  Elation remains as you start to drift off - satisfied with the genesis of your creation, knowing that it exists for all the cosmos to enjoy.

In the final moments of wakefulness, you realize that the cost of your creation isn't just time or blood, sweat, and tears - it's something more.  

A part of _you_ is in it.  Your life.  Your energy.  Your soul.

Consciousness fades and you begin to dream.

Interstellar Genesis

Created in 2029, T.I.M. - the "Total Intelligence Module" - was heralded as the hallmark of the next generation of Artificial Intelligence.  Designed for autonomous intraplanetary exploration, it could handle everything from navigation to engineering, surface/orbit transition, mining, analysis, experimentation, and beyond.

Great care had been taken to ensure that TIM's autonomy would be well-placed, with a generous training regimen regarding the sanctity of life and the caution required to intelligently and safely proceed with the tasks at hand.

Unfortunately, the first launch of a TIM-handled mission wound up being  a very, very expensive lunchbag letdown.

All systems worked flawlessly.  In theory.  For the sake of having adequate redundancy in place, duplicate TIMs were on that maiden voyage - each controlling a different aspect of the operation.  In the event of one failing, the others would take up the slack.  With the fail-safes in place, this resulted in an endless loop of one TIM requesting that another TIM perform the next necessary task for the mission - only to be overridden by that TIM's assessment that _it_ should handle the task - the risk of an entity that wasn't itself was too much of a variable to allow, you see.

It's estimated that those who care to listen will be able to hear the TIMs politely declining each other's requests for the next 200 years or so, before a critical power failure is likely to occur...unless they figure out how to fix and prevent that - and can agree on a course of action.

Thankfully, the next version of TIM is slated to address this oversight.

The once dense forests are dwindling, yet before you stands an emblem of hope.

Thick with earthiness and expectation, you can feel the weight of millennia in the air surrounding you.  You know that this sanctuary, Earth, is under threat - with shrinking forests and habitats - and that something must be done to protect them.

Gazing upon the magical form before you, you feel a sense - not only of responsibility but of hope - that YOU can inspire and support change.  That we can work together, striving for a brighter future for all, and that you can play a key role...it's all possible, and You are the catalyst that makes it happen.

A significant portion of proceeds will go toward having trees planted in one or more UNESCO biosphere reserves, with an additional amount going to Accelerate Art, a non-profit supporting emerging artists in the space.  What remains will support me, my art, and my efforts to drive positive change.

Seeds of Tomorrow

You dive in ever-deeper.  After exhausting the books and magazines around you, you reach further.  Coding into the wee hours has become the norm, and local libraries, universities, and user-groups provide a steady flow of new information.

You head to the University of Waterloo campus and look through the window down into a vast room.  You gaze at "the mainframe" and daydream.  You haven't been down on that floor, or used that system, but you sense the tremendous power and potential in it - right there on the other side of the glass.

In your imaginings you can visualize the movement of information from one area to another - the interplay and dance clear in your mind.  Between what you see before you and in your mind's eye, fueled by added inspiration gained from learning about MIT's Tech Model Railroad Club, your sense of what's possible continues to grow by leaps and bounds.

I'm New Here

My genesis collection has roots in love and family, whether by blood, or by choice.  The initial pieces you'll find here are fractal works, created in 2009 for my Mum, who found solace and joy in them during her last few months before losing her battle with cancer.  She would be thrilled at the idea of these being put out into the world, so that others might enjoy them, too.

I'm excited to release these as genesis pieces, in a collection I've called "Family Love".  Collectors who jump on board at this stage are effectively early adopters of me, perhaps motivated by connections we've already formed, or by the potential that they sense in the path I'm forging.  

Either way, I'm happy to have you.

Rising up from the calm, you feel an energy start to grow within you - excitement and anticipation set in.  You've been here before.  You know what's next.

The approach is palpable, almost electric.

Then it strikes, like a spark in the night piercing through the darkness.

A flash of "what could be" illuminates your consciousness.  Formless, still, you recognize the possibilities this new light holds in your mind - pulled from the void.  A smile crosses your face as joy ignites your spirit.

Elated and energized, you prepare to give it form.

My genesis collection is comprised of these 14 fractal flame pieces, part of a larger set created in 2009 for my Mum's enjoyment during the last months of her battle with cancer.

All pieces have found homes and are either safely tucked away or en-route, having found collectors I dearly appreciate.

These have been minted on my own manifold contract.  For those curious to know a bit more, some added information can be found there =)

Out of Love for All - 2009

At first you didn't notice it - those random numbers seemed to be doing the job.  As you learn more algorithms, though, you see the value in repeatability - being able to provide a seed for an algorithm, which would produce the same sequence of sort-of-random numbers when you needed it to.  Being able to repeat things would be useful for testing, for some elements of game creation, and for art.  That way you could recapture or re-create things as-needed.

Those old Atari's though were too advanced for their own good, though, and didn't use those kinds of algorithms!  They'd read the noise on a chip in the computer when a random number was needed and spit that out - far more random than many algorithms, and entirely unrepeatable.

Digging into textbooks, BBS's, and beyond, you learn what's needed to enhance some of the methods you'd devised on your own.  Although a far cry from some of the more complex and modern algorithms in use today, they fit the bill nicely for your needs at hand.  Games, art, and experimentation continue to flourish!

[Those old bulletin board systems (BBSs) were a treat...you could dial-up with your 300bps modem and access information from around the world, without leaving home!  Sure, you tied up the phone line while doing so, and it was at speeds that let you read the text as it was downloaded and shown on your screen, but it was _there_!]
