Description

Mayureshwar Sanctuary is the closest sanctuary to Pune, where I lived for 3,5 years while on an expat assignment. All the larger sanctuaries, especially those that were known to have a tiger population, were at least a flight away. So, I tried to go out to Mayureshwar at least a few times as it was within driving distance. Though there’s no big cats, there is deer to be found as well as quite a lot of different birds. On of the better encounters that I had was when we took our car a bit deeper into the sanctuary and found a group of Steppe Eagles perched rather close to the road. They tend to be quite OK with cars driving by, but the moment they spot something out of the ordinary they tend to take off. So, when I spotted one of them sitting around a corner, I decided to approach it on foot, hiding my silhouette behind some bushes and rocks. I set up the camera and moved across the corner and got this great shot of the eagle taking flight and soaring away.
