Syntax of Sorrow

Description

All Avianting DALL·E-generated AI digital image, 2022 Created for the Syntax of Sorrow exhibition with Colonna Contemporary, January 2026 All Avianting (2022) is DALL·E-generated and functions as the originating image from which Resonare Velata developed. Produced in response to the prompt “What does love mean to AI?”, the work records an abstract hallucination generated entirely through statistical association rather than lived or biological experience. Artificial intelligence cannot feel emotion; it can only recombine the visual and linguistic traces of human expression embedded within its training data. The composition presents a field of fragmented symbols and distorted language suspended within simulated space. An Alien-like head suggests computational detachment, the eye implies surveillance, nebulous hearts approximate synthetic affection, and connective dashes operate as syntactic bridges. Reversed and corrupted phrases such as “All Avianting” and “Ahuthing Hove Low” hover at the edge of legibility, revealing how meaning collapses when language is processed probabilistically rather than intentionally. As an artifact of generative image-making, All Avianting exposes the limitations of machine interpretation at a formative moment in AI development. Preserved without intervention, the work functions as a digital fossil of synthetic affect, reflecting how sentiment becomes abstracted and alienated when divorced from embodied human experience. The image anchors an inquiry into mechanical grief, inherited language, and the absence of feeling within artificial systems. This image is preserved in its original, unaltered form and made available as a non-fungible token in an edition of 50.
