Description

In my house there were always little notes stuck to the walls and to every object that lived in it. I carry in my memory the shadow of my grandmother putting them up, so she wouldn't forget the most basic things. My mother, repeats. Memory loss doesn't announce itself; it appears first in the notes, in the small pieces of paper someone needs in order to remember they exist, in order not to be forgotten. I live with the certainty that the past belongs only to me. I write it in green over green. I cover my face with notes. I try to light a candle. The wind won't let me. These works mark the first appearance of my body in the practice, not as image, but as signature. A mark of authorship in a moment when authorship itself is becoming unstable. I had been thinking about what artificial intelligence does to identity. How it copies, distorts, completes, deforms. I subjected my own body to it as material. The system would attempt to replicate me and fail spiraling, generating versions, producing distortions that never quite became me. That failure became the operation of the work. I placed myself next to it as evidence: proof that there was still something the machine could not reach. At least for now. Until it learns. These works inhabit a transition. From the physical body to the digital one. From a self that exists to one that gets generated. They also work with memory, with presence, with the afterlife of images we no longer care about, the digital residue we produce and abandon at extraordinary speeds. I worked with what was already mine: the candle, the braids, the fan, the hand. Elements I had used for years in painting. I brought them into video not as abandonment, but as translation, to keep speaking from inside the same universe in another language.
