1/1 For eight years consecutively (the pandemic switched things up; also, State Route 1 near Big Sur was closed due to weather damage during some years), I participated in a bicycle charity event (Best Buddies Hearst Castle Challenge) that begins in Carmel, California on California State Route 1 and ends at Hearst Castle. I did not, ha ha, full disclosure, ever ride the entire 100 miles - the most I did was 50 miles, broken up by being transported by SAG (support and gear). It was still really hard for me, though! Before participating in this event for the first time, I had only ridden at most maybe twelve miles in one stretch. The route is completely magical from beginning to end. It really is completely different seeing it on a bicycle versus zooming by in a vehicle. Not only did I benefit from seeing the spectacular scenery on the route, make friends, tone my bottom half, but I also loved being able to support this worthy charity. For anyone interested, I rode a Giant Avail Advanced 2 carbon during this event. I later did several multi-day bicycle tours, which were super amazing. Though they were all exhilarating, my fave bike tour is the 5-day tour we did on the east coast of Taiwan where we began at Taroko Gorge.
