Description

After graduating from a degree in photography, I had my path laid out in front of me. I was told that to become a successful photographer, I needed to move to London, assist photographers for a few years, then finally become a freelance photographer myself and hopefully achieve some of my goals by age 30. But something inside me was craving a different adventure so after a year of assisting in London, I moved to Norway. I remember shaking as I told a photographer I really looked up to about my plan to work as a northern lights tour guide up in the Arctic Circle. I thought he would tell me that I was an idiot for giving up my London life and my clear path. But he smiled and told me it was a great idea. He said that I would learn so much from living in a different culture, creating photographs of the northern lights, pushing through harsh weather conditions. He explained that I’d meet people from all over the world and that I could use all of these experiences and skills to become a great freelance photographer. So I went for it. He was right: I learned so many social skills, shot outside in -18ºC, built a portfolio that then became a book and pushed through with the challenges that come with moving to a new country. I became a much stronger person. Then I moved to Iceland and became a fully freelance photographer much earlier than I’d originally planned. I truly believe everything I learned in Norway got me to where I am today. Because being a professional photographer is so much more than taking photos - it’s business skills, social skills, life experience and empathy. So if you feel like your future is mapped out for you, that there’s only one road towards success, remember that there are many different paths and choosing a more adventurous, risky one does not mean that you won’t get to where you want to be. You’re in charge of your future, so don’t think about the ‘shoulds’ and go for what excites you most.
