October 31, 1991, The Paramount Theater, Seattle WA - Just released I took this photo during Nirvana’s only HD video performance ever recorded. Only 2,800 people attended the Nirvana concert - Live at the Paramount, Halloween Night 1991. And I was the only photographer to shoot it. Halloween night in Seattle. Kurt Cobain shines both in the spotlight, and the minds of those who watch. He is lost in the music on a plain. I normally do not shoot like this because I prefer to include as many band members as possible in live shots, but when I saw Kurt alone in all that black space from the side stage, it just moved me so much I just had to capture it. But even when he stood here, alone in the light and fame, he was never truly alone on stage. He was always surrounded by his band and grunge family, by punk artists, by fellow outcasts, and all of us who identified so strongly with what he expressed and how he did it. The day before this surreal show, Nevermind had gone Gold with 500,000 albums sold. And during the performance, Kurt quipped, “Smile, you are on candid camera!” Because there were so many cameras set up to capture every moment and angle of the performance. Normally photographers are not allowed to shoot during video recordings to cut down on obscured video shots, but I was allowed to due to my closeness with the band and the fact that this was happening on our home turf. I still consider it an absolute honor. The energy that night in both the band and the audience was electric and unforgettable. We were all so happy for them and their success; it became a true hometown, Seattle celebration!
