Description

This sub-adult tiger shark was observed in a remote Tuamotus atoll during the first exploratory expedition by Mao Mana Foundation in response to local fishermen reporting large numbers of tiger sharks gathering in the lagoon. The fishermen use the area for fishing during the new moon when fish populations gather inside the lagoon near the pass. The combination of sardines used by the fishermen while fishing, the natural fish activity, and the easy access to the open ocean by the nearby pass invites this apex predator within the lagoon. This site is an incredible, unique insight to habitat usage by life stage for the tiger shark and is continually surveyed by Mao Mana Foundation. Thirty six tiger sharks have currently been identified in this specific location to date. Kori Burkhardt is an underwater photographer, expedition leader, & shark biologist based in French Polynesia. Capturing the ocean's apex predator by completely immersing with them, her goal is to show sharks in a beautiful, yet still powerful, perspective. As co-founder of conservation and research organization Mao Mana Foundation, her mission commits to protecting sharks. Featured on National Geographic and Discovery Channel for her work with sharks since 2014 (previously under Kori Garza).
