Description

Those twin volcanoes are Licancabur (left) and Juriques (right) at the first light of summers breaking dawn. Their location is about 40 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama and they are both shared by Chile and Bolivia national territories. For native people from the desert, nowadays self called Atacameños, Licancabur is a very sacred volcano with a huge past of ceremonial events and shaman spiritual self development processes. The story told through countless years is that Juriques was once conical shaped like his brother and maybe a little taller, but not as perfectly rounded as Licancabur. Close to them, at the place where this photo was taken from, there was a mountain called "Quimal". Both the twins were in deep love with Quimal and Quimal would only have eyes (or rocks) for Licancabur, which was already being a cerimonial place for the Likanantaí people, atacameños ancestors also called Kunzas. During a long mountain-perspective time passage, Juriques felt jealouss about the two lovers and, when couldn't hold it anymore, started an enormous fight with Licancabur. Through another long time, the territory was all afected by the fight and became very unstable, with constant cataclysms. Then Lascar, the most active volcano on Atacama's desert and father of both fighters, decided to interfere. From 60 kilometers of distance, he sent two fire balls: one of them created Licancabur's cratera and lake, the other one cut off Juriques's peak. From the impact, the Domeyko mountain range would also have been formed and departed Quimal away from the twins. Once a year, on every winter solstice, Licancabur's shadows touches Quimal and this way announces the beginning of farming seasons.
