Description

On Valentine's Day 2019 I had a mammogram that ultimately led to the dreaded words "You have breast cancer." A couple of weeks later, my family and I were en route to a beach weekend in Ormond-by-the-Sea, Florida, when I received a call from my breast surgeon with the news that I'd need a double mastectomy (I'd been hoping I'd only need a lumpectomy). Panic and fear ensued. The next morning, I got up early to catch the sunrise. I was alone on the beach ... but not for long. I'd just set my things down when I turned and saw this heron strolling calmly toward the surf. It's hard for me to describe what happened for the next hour or so after that. I expected the heron to quickly fly away, but it didn't. It stared out to sea as if contemplating life, as I was. It walked slowly along the shore, and allowed me to walk along with it, taking photo after photo. A feeling of immense peace and relief came over me. It was as if I could hear the words "it's going to be okay." I knew then and there that nature photography was going to become a form of therapy throughout my breast cancer journey, and it was. It still is. Whenever I feel my stress level rising, I know that I can grab my camera, go out in nature, and regain a sense of peace. I'm forever grateful for that beach, that sunrise, and that heron.
