Description
In the summer of 2024, I took a roadtrip with my family across the USA to visit my parents in Oregon. We had a great time there, but it was a lot of driving, especially for two adults and two toddlers. We decided that my wife would fly back with the kids, and I'd drive cross-country solo on the way back!
I didn't get much shooting done in the handful of days I drove; it was mostly long hours, quick stops at highway rest areas, and late night hotels. My stand-out memory from the trip, though, was sleeping in our mini-van at the Bonneville Salt Flats. This majestic yet barren area of Utah is one of my all-time favorites. The wind was whipping over the salty desert all night, as distant lightning storms rolled by. I was fortunate enough not to get rained on, so I had my tripod and camera out there taking a timelapse ALL night.
With those strong winds, however, despite my best efforts to stabilize the camera, the timelapse was a bust. Thankfully, it was a crisp, lovely morning, and I groggily brewed some coffee over a camp stove while I watched the sunrise. Sometimes, life is but a dream.
