Description

Abandoned and now demolished, Westborough State Hospital. She dropped into the abandoned building, through an open basement window and instantly, the smell of water damage and decay invaded her nostrils. It was a familiar and comforting smell; it meant she could leave the outside world behind for a little while. She entered the pitch-black hallway and waited a minute for her eyes to adjust. Every slight movement sent echoes permeating through the dark, heavy silence. With her senses on high alert, she decided she would need her flashlight until she made her way safely upstairs. As she followed the cone of light through a labyrinth of concrete shells and exposed piping, she could feel the cold air nipping at her cheeks. And then, as quickly as she had entered the darkness, she found a light at the end of the tunnel – a staircase. She slowly and quietly climbed her way into the glow of sunshine, which poured through the windows on the main level. She put her flashlight away, got her camera out and slowly started to comb each room for an interesting scene to capture. As she walked, the sound of paint chips crackled beneath her boots, indicating that she was almost there. And the scene she was looking for was waiting for her…just beyond the next doorway… Layers: Much like an exposed layer of paint chips, or the upper and lower layer of an abandoned building, an artist too, has many layers to peel back, before you can fully understand the beauty and essence of their art.
