Description
**The Narrative**
Starlight was born from Nygilia's immersion in the Chihuahuan Desert during her Art Blocks x OpenSea residency in Marfa, Texas. She encountered the Marfa Lights, an unexplained atmospheric phenomenon that has captivated scientists and mystics alike for over a century, and began studying their relationship to the land's spiritual energy and Indigenous lore. Central to her research was the Apache legend of the Fallen Star: a story of light, descent, and transformation that she found in profound resonance with the lights themselves. Her research extended into James Bunnell's field study *Hunting Marfa Lights*, a scientific investigation of the phenomenon across Mitchell Flat. On page 138, Bunnell documents a discovery: a lightning bug native to the region that emits blue light. It is an electric, otherworldly blue. That image, a small living creature producing cold light in the desert, became the animating metaphor for the movement logic within Starlight's code. Each spirit instance appears, drifts, blends, overlaps, dissolves, fades, and echoes the way those lights move across the region.
*"Heritage is a never-ending algorithm that can be represented through lived experiences and culture." *
*-Nygilia*
Nygilia distilled a visual and conceptual vocabulary: spirits of light, falling celestial forms, orbiting energy, the eclipse moment between dark and radiance, and encoded it into a generative system. Each output is a unique moment in an infinite spiritual frequency, produced by code that carries the weight of place, myth, and living science.
**Visual Inspirations**
*Princess Mononoke* (the Kodama spirits) - Miyazaki's silent forest spirits, who are small, translucent, appearing and disappearing in clusters across a landscape, directly shaped Nygilia's conception of the Marfa Light's form. The layered repetition of 300 spirits looks at the way Kodama populate the forest: individually small, collectively overwhelming.
*Sinners* (The Juke Joint Scene) - The transcendent juke joint sequence in Ryan Coogler's film, where music, spirit, and ancestral presence collapse into a single electric moment, gave Nygilia the emotional register she wanted Starlight to inhabit. Starlight treats the Marfa Lights as that same channel. The code is the juke joint.
West Texas Daytime and Nighttime shapes - The Chihuahuan Desert has its own visual grammar. This includes cacti, desert birds, lizards on warm rocks, beetles moving across the environment, dogs at dusk, and stars emerging at night. These forms are encoded as the shapes within each spirit figure.
*Hunting Marfa Lights*, James Bunnell, p. 138 - Bunnell's decade-long field documentation is the scientific backbone of the project. His discovery of a blue-light-emitting lightning bug in Mitchell Flat became the movement metaphor for the code.
**The Generative System**
Each Starlight output is produced by a bespoke, hash-seeded p5.js script.
Layer 1 (The 1/1 palette remixer) - The script draws from a master pool of 54 hand-selected, fully unique colors, organized into six named palettes of 9 colors each. It is built from direct observation of the desert across different times of day. On each mint, one palette is selected and a random subset of 6–11 colors is sampled from it. Each color then receives an individualized shift in hue, saturation, and brightness, with a brightness floor that keeps every output visibly random, ensuring every token's palette is a genuine 1-of-1 derivation.
Layer 2 (Movement logic) - Inspired by Bunnell's blue lightning bug. 300 spirit instances are rendered per output, each independently rotated (0°–360°) and scaled (45%–90%). Placement follows a jittered grid across the full canvas, with every output randomly populated.
Layer 3 (The spirit form) - At the heart of every output is a hand-designed figure: the Marfa Light Spirit, built from the visual shapes of West Texas. This includes cactus silhouettes, bird forms, lizard curves, beetle bodies, star patterns abstracted into circles and ellipses. A primary color drives the face and core body; a secondary color drives the falling star trails, light orbs, and eclipse forms; then the gradient accents the inner orb constellations.
**Traits**
- Color Theme - palettes the token's colors are drawn from
- Star Level - determine how many colors appear in the token's palette
- Gradient - a rarity scale that controls how tight or broad each blend reads
- Atmosphere - computes the token's overall brightness, saturation, and hue
