Description
Artist: Yulia Denisyuk
Edition: 1/1
Collection: Solitary Journeys
About the image: Walking down a busy street in Hanoi, Vietnam, I came across a woman selling Vietnam Lottery tickets, motorcycles whizzing by her left and right. Before I ever pressed the shutter, I saw this image in my head. I quickly switched my camera settings to slow down shutter speed just enough to turn the motorcyclists into light trails while keeping my main subject sharp. When I photograph something that excites me, I experience flow. This image was no exception. It is one of my most cherished creations. Technically, it represents my style: using soft, natural light, placing subjects in a frame in a deliberate way, creating an impromptu performance from the scenes I encounter on my travels. Philosophically, it represents how humans relate to time. For some, time goes unnoticed as they hurry through their daily obligations, places to be, people to see. Others possess the art of sitting still, observing, and, hopefully, slowing time down in the process.
Location: Vietnam
Year: 2016

About the collection: Shot across eight countries in the span of six years, the “Solitary Journeys” collection blurs the lines between street photography, documentary photography, travel photography, and art. Every photograph represents a relationship between movement and stillness and explores the transience of human experience, showing moments that may have otherwise gone unnoticed in the hustle of our daily lives.
