Artist: DJ Furth Edition: 1/1 Lake Baikal is the energetic and spiritual center of the region. It is the single largest fresh water lake on the planet by volume as well as the oldest and deepest. The lake and its surrounding areas are revered as a sacred places and are the source of many of the most important local beliefs and mythologies. Its importance spans across all forms of spirituality in the area — shamanic, Buddhism and Orthodox alike. Regarding Siberian identity and connection with the natural environment, Chef Stanislaw (Portrait #13) put it this way: “A Siberian is someone who has been very intimately connected with nature of the course of history…these are the people inextricably intertwined with nature. They cannot exist without nature. They derive strength from it. They derive emotion from it. They live and they can exist only with nature. They cannot exist apart. That’s it.”
