There are a few types of seeing: - Seeing the thing - Seeing into it - Seeing THROUGH it To see ‘through’ is to understand the true nature and intentions of the other while seeing its perspective of its surroundings, including yourself. A leopard is most likely going to see you long before you are aware of its presence - especially at night. In fact, I’m certain I have walked or driven past a countless amount of leopards over the years. Big cats have a large amount of rod cells in their eyes which allows them to pick up motion very easily in the dark. Our tracker located this secretive young male in the long grass on a night safari. We had less than a minute with him before he moved off and melted into the darkness.These moments always leave me with a sense of wonder. What is he going to experience tonight? This shot was assisted by the tracker shining a spotlight toward the subject. The light is never shone directly into the subjects eyes and behaviour never altered. The ethics regarding night time viewing are extremely strict in these areas, and rightly so. Captured in Timbavati, Kruger National Park, 10/04/2019
