Description

The Predjama Castle in Slovenia is the most unique one I have come across. Nesting comfortably in a niche on the vertical face of a steep cliff, this medieval structure stood the test of time and survived many sieges through the centuries. Exploring this castle from within, I was fascinated by the way every aspect of the natural cave system was harmoniously blended into the man-made structure to make this fortress habitable. These caves shaped a portion of the internal castle walls. Its natural shafts provided ventilation, a drainage system, water supply and even a secret passageway through which goods could be transported during times of war. To me, this formidable structure symbolizes resilience: the ability to adapt to a challenging situation, survive its brutal blows, and emerge from it as a better version of oneself. Gazing up this architectural marvel from the foot of the cliff, I pondered at the life I have lived so far. Every hardship, every painful change, every rejection had to happen, in order to lead me to where I stand now. It is easy to give up when you are going through an ordeal. But my experiences so far tell me that the path of the downtrodden is not one to follow; that with support from the people I trust, with faith, and with a level head I can maneuver myself out of any situation towards a brighter tomorrow. The inhabitants of the castle often sought comfort in one another and remained strategic, vigilant and coordinated in the heat of things. In calmer times, they would enjoy the happy moments to the fullest, while also preparing themselves for possible darker days. This is the lesson we must draw from this unique slice of history.
