Description

Marcel Duchamp: Fountain, 1917 Duchamp bought a mass-produced porcelain urinal from a plumbing shop, turned it upside down, signed it “R. Mutt”, and submitted it to the Society of Independent Artists exhibition in New York. The work was rejected, even though the exhibition claimed that every submitted work would be accepted. Duchamp resigned from the society in protest. The episode became a landmark in modern art. Duchamp suggested that the artist’s choice and context could transform an ordinary object into a work of art. The work challenged the idea of what can be considered art. 2026: Is AI art?
