Description

The Colossus of Rhodes was a sculpture erected by Chares of Lindos in 280 BC. It was a representation of the sun god Helios and was created to commemorate to celebrate a successful defense of Rhodes from Demetrius Poliocretes who was a king of Macedon and was part of the Antigonid dynasty. The statue stood 108 feet high and was equivalent to the height of the modern Statue of Liberty. It didn't stand long as it was damaged by an earthquake in the year 226 BC. The Rhodians decided against repairing and it stood damaged for many years to come. In 653 an Arabic force invaded and conquered Rhodes and finished the job off. The Colossus stood no longer and its materials were sold off to the highest bidder. This statue was known as one of the 7 ancient wonders of the world.
