The Earth as it was is no more. Once scarred by war and ecological collapse, its ruins now serve as a distant memory of a species that could not save itself. But life persists—not as it was, but as something new. The Oankali, extraterrestrial beings driven by the need to merge and evolve, have remade the planet in their own image, weaving together what remains of Earth’s biosphere with their living, organic technology. Lo, a sentient material that breathes and shifts, spreads across the landscape, replacing dead soil with flesh-like terrain, reshaping the world into an interconnected organism.
Beneath the surface of this new world, Aaron undergoes metamorphosis. It was born of both human and Oankali lineage, a construct of two species entwined. Now, submerged in the depths of Lo, its body is no longer its own—it is fluid, unravelling and reforming, adapting to the alien rhythms that guide its transformation. Its bones soften, its skin pulses with new textures, sensory organs bloom where none existed before. Lo senses and responds, extending tendrils that touch and reshape, feeding the process, moulding Aaron into something neither fully human nor entirely Oankali but something else.
The world is no longer built. It grows. Structures breathe. Ecosystems are not controlled but cultivated in symbiosis. The old Earth is gone, but its remnants live on, entwined with alien intelligence, creating a future that is not about preservation, but change. Aaron is part of that future, part of the unfolding—its metamorphosis is not an end, but a beginning.
Inspired by Octavia Butler’s Xenogenesis trilogy, this animation envisions life after Earth’s collapse, where the Oankali have reshaped the planet into a living, evolving organism. Lo, their sentient organic material, cradles Aaron in the depths, guiding its metamorphosis into something beyond human—a being woven into the rhythms of an alien world.
