Description

"Cat with a Pearl Earring" by Meowhannes Vermeer is a captivating tale about a young cat named Whiskers who becomes a housecat in the home of the famous cat painter. Whiskers' calm and perceptive nature not only helps her in her daily duties as a housecat but also attracts the attention of the painter. Though different in breed and social standing, they share a similar way of looking at the world. Vermeer slowly draws Whiskers into his world of paintings - the still, luminous images of solitary cats in domestic settings. In contrast to her life in the painter's studio, Whiskers must carve a place for herself in the chaotic household run by Vermeer's volatile cat wife Catharina, his shrewd cat mother-in-law Meowria Thins, and their fiercely loyal cat maid Tanneke. Six kittens (and counting) fill out the household, dominated by six-year-old Cornelia, a mischievous kitten who sees more than she should. As Whiskers becomes part of her master's work, their growing intimacy spreads disruption and jealousy within the ordered household and even - as the scandal seeps out - ripples in the world beyond the cat community. On the verge of adulthood, Whiskers also contends with the growing attentions both from a local tomcat butcher and from Vermeer's patron, the wealthy van Ruijven. Through it all, Whiskers must find her way through this new and strange life outside the familiar alley she grew up in, now fragmented by cat politics and rivalries. As she becomes part of Vermeer's world, she must navigate the complex social structures of the cat household while preserving her own dignity and independence.
