The mighty Clarence River meets the Pacific Ocean at Yamba, once an annual gathering place for the tribes. Surfing, drinking very cold beer and eating seafood are deeply ingrained in the lifestyles of modern coastal Australians. Nearby Angourie has one of the most challenging point breaks in the world. The Yamba Surf Lifesaving Club (the yellow building) formed in 1908, is one of the oldest surf clubs in existence, and the Pacific Hotel serves very cold beer, freshly shucked local oysters, and a startling array of local fish and prawns. This sleepy, laidback fishing town of 6,000 was my home for a couple of years back in 2002, and the Pacific Hotel was the local (and only) pub. Aside from being one of only two places where there’d be any action - a cool band playing off the radar, a meat raffle, a drunken fight, or a DJ - the endless view from the deck of the Pacific transfixed me from the moment I caught sight of it from the bar. I remember gulping down my first pot of Toohey’s New, then ordering one schooner after another as I sat outside for a couple of hours in awe at what lay in front of me. From here I’d watch whales calve, dolphins and humans surf, storms roll in, and sunrise burst over the horizon from the rickety deck. It was all the action I needed, and my first real connection with the ocean’s rhythm. I took two photographs of the view in 2004 with my first digital camera, and finally stitched them together in 2022. I’m excited to share this limited edition run that has been minted in celebration of the TunaTime event at objkt.com. Any pieces remaining at the end of the event on August 28, 2022 will be burnt.
