Description

In 2017, workers employed by a subcontractor for Facebook (now Meta) spoke out about the brutal reality of their jobs endless hours spent sifting through the internet’s darkest content: beheadings, bestiality, child abuse. There was little emotional support, only silence and screen glare. Salawaki finally felt the weight of it. The alienation didn’t come all at once, it seeped in slowly, until her body knew it before she did. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Becoming a Ghost for the Machine is a series of AR works that follows Salawaki as she becomes an avatar shaped by the unseen digital labor behind AI taking on jobs like data annotation and content moderation, the kind of repetitive, invisible work often outsourced to the Global South. Salawaki reflects the people who train AI but are erased from its narrative. The project also nods to growing resistance, including recent protests against AI surveillance systems. She becomes not just a fantasy of the future. Salawaki is the ghost of the present, haunted by the past, still working inside the machine like a trace left behind by the real laborers.
