Description

An almanac of the otter's year, printed the way publishers once printed their cheap popular series: in chūban, from carved wooden blocks, one colour at a time. Each mint pulls one sheet of twelve. January's ice, February's plum, the otters' festival in March, cherry petals, irises, June rain, lotus, cormorant fishing by torchlight, the autumn moon, red maples, wild geese, and December's snow. Three months are rarer than the rest. Each mint also pulls its own impression. Most come off well-used blocks, where the colours drift off register and the key lines chip and thicken. On the latest pulls the planks have split along the grain and the bokashi has been left off. A few are first impressions (shozuri), crisp and complete, finished with a karazuri pass: relief pressed into the paper without ink. Then the years have their say: some sheets are still fresh, others yellowed and foxed. Koyomi is the open edition to Dassai's single sheet.
