Description
Experience the fascinating traditions and mystical rituals of Kerala at the Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple during the annual Bharani festival.
Thousands of devout followers, dressed in striking red attire, can be seen running fervently around the temple, wielding sabers and chanting provocative songs directed at the deity. This unique spectacle is unlike anything else.
The concept of an oracle in this tradition refers to a devotee being possessed by the spirit of the deity, transforming them into a divine medium. During the festival, thousands of oracles march to the temple, surrendering themselves entirely to the goddess. Through the ritual of “chuvappu theendal” (anointing with red), they symbolically merge with the divine, believing this act of devotion renews and rebirths them as new individuals.
