Description

"I accepted this assignment with strictly malicious intentions. I hoped to paint something that would ruin the appetite of every son of a bitch who ever ate in that room." M. Rothko --- In 1958, Mark Rothko received a prestigious commission to create a series of paintings for the Four Seasons restaurant, located inside the Seagram Building in New York — an icon of modernist architecture designed by Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson. The offer was tempting, both for the significance of the location and the generous fee. Rothko accepted and immersed himself in the work, producing a series of large, dark-toned canvases designed to engage with the space and evoke a profound, almost unsettling visual experience. However, during a visit to the restaurant while it was still under construction, Rothko was disturbed by the elegant, upscale atmosphere. The idea that his works would serve as decorative background for business lunches and elite dinners deeply unsettled him. He began to feel that the commission was incompatible with his vision of art — something meant to be intense and almost spiritual, not a mere ornament for New York’s upper class. In a radical move, Rothko decided to withdraw from the project. He returned the advance he had received and kept the paintings for himself. Years later, a portion of those works would be donated to the Tate Gallery in London. This episode became emblematic of the tension between art and the market — between creative integrity and cultural compromise. With that decision, Rothko affirmed his commitment to defending the deeper meaning of art against any form of trivialisation or elitist consumption. --- 100% onchain
