Description

The Great Oxygenation Event by Adam Dickinson refers to the period, 2.5 billion years ago, when cyanobacteria first appeared on Earth, displacing most anaerobic organisms by polluting the atmosphere with oxygen through photosynthesis, thereby ‘greening’ the blue seas of the planet. The poem represents this gradual shift from blue to green through text derived from the names of shades in notable colour systems. The accompanying reading of the poem incorporates regular pauses increasing from 4.5 to 5.5 seconds, mapping temporal shifts onto the 450–550 nm blue-green interval of the visible spectrum.
