Mesopotamia is the name of a historical region meaning between two rivers. These two rivers were called Tigris and Euphrates. Mesopotamia encompassed all the regions today known as Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Israel, Palestine, Syria, and Jordan. The Mesopotamian art was influenced by components like religion, tutelary deities, and the king.
The city-states and cultures of Mesopotamia are mostly classified under Sumerian, Akkadian, Neo-Sumerian, Babylonian, Assyrian, and Neo-Babylonian categories. The influence of these city-states, under the ruling of the Persians at the time of the Achaemenian Dynasty, extended as far as the ancient Egypt. The art pieces remaining from these civilizations are kept in different museums around the world, especially in the Louvre. The Mesopotamian civilizations were home to various types of artworks. It is important to note, though, that the ones inspiring the illustrations in this gallery are the Mesopotamian sculptures.
Among the most important features of the Mesopotamian sculptures are relatively large bodies and round faces, heavily stylized hair, soft and narrow lips, long and thin eyebrows, and wide eyes. The eye was considered as the most influential part of the body, representing a door opened to the human soul. In different civilizations, the hollowed out eye sockets were inlaid with precious stones, most of which were gouged out over centuries or were stolen by aliens. Consequently, only the eye sockets are remaining today. In the faces of all sculptures, there is a kind of mysterious serenity which reminds one of ancient rituals. The human figure of these sculptures is often rigid and artificial.
