Working with the effect of bleed-through of watercolor, markers and ink on paper, I begin by playing intuitively with forms that materialize and with topics and questions that occupy me, slowly building details and variations on each side. Over many cycles. The prominent figures emerging on both sides of paper were bird-like beings with poised staffs, locked in an enigmatic martial art-inspired duel. In many traditions and mythologies, birds represent an allegorical flight of liberation and aspirations for higher realms and an archetypical figure of freedom. It's a celebration of flight's poetry and the art of soaring beyond confines (often of our own making). 'Ila Lua' is a metaphor for the introspective mode of being - nighting, seeking solitude, reflection, delving into the fractal hidden worlds of the world and of self. Ila Lua is a Moon Island. A necessity of the inner mirror and seeing the patterns in the details, delicate threads. Why may it be that it is in the mirror that one sees one's opponent? Who? Sees? Whom? ABOUT HYBRID MYTHOLOGIES A journey merging different mythologies, symbolic systems and archetypes from different cultures with intuitive creativity. This ongoing project weaves a playful hybrid world, blending expressive languages and storytelling modalities and reflecting on the essence of and universality of expressing human narratives and myths of self and the collective through art. Hybrid Mythologies is a tapestry of interconnected tales, imaginary and beyond imaginary landscapes and serendipitous symbolic intersections.
