Description

This painting began as a conversation with La siesta by Antonio Berni. In Berni’s work, the scene captures a quiet moment of rest within the social landscape of Argentina. In my version, I approach the painting not as something fixed in the past, but as a living image that can be opened, transformed, and reimagined through my own visual language. By intervening in the composition, I combine elements of Berni’s imagery with the symbols, colors, and gestural marks that appear throughout my work. The calm atmosphere of the original scene begins to shift, and the figures move into a more ambiguous space somewhere between rest, dream, and hallucination. Much of my work explores altered states of perception and the thin line between reality and imagination. In this sense, the siesta becomes more than a pause from work, it becomes a portal. The landscape starts to dissolve into color, fragments, and energetic marks, creating a space where memory, dream, and reality overlap. Revisiting Berni’s painting also means entering into dialogue with art history. As a woman artist working many decades later, I’m interested in how reinterpreting these works allows me to insert my own voice into that lineage, transforming the image while acknowledging its presence. Through this process, the painting becomes a meeting point between past and presentwhere Berni’s social realism intersects with my own contemporary, symbolic universe.
