According to Ovid’s Metamorphoses, written in 8 AD, The Oracle of Delphi told the Phoenician prince Cadmus to follow a cow and build a city at the first place it decided to lie down. The cow collapsed at the future site of Thebes. The companions of Cadmus, sent out to fetch water, disturbed a dragon – a son of Ares – who was guarding a well. The dragon emerged from its cave and savagely killed the men. To this observation should be added the gruesome immediacy of the unequal struggle between the dragon and Cadmus’s men. The violence of the narrative is portrayed in gruesome detail in the foreground, and continues in the background, where Cadmus can be glimpsed fighting the beast. In revenge, Cadmus slayed the dragon. ----------- Artist diary entry, dated October, 2022: These last few months have been very difficult for me. I think it has been the hardest year I've ever been through, even though I've gone through really dark times before. SOMETIMES WE FEEL LIFE LIKE A DRAGON DEVOURING US ALIVE. The person you love the most treats you like shit, your family turns their back on you, pain, illness, personal failures. But when your world falls apart and you can't find a reason to keep living, there is always an oasis in the middle of the desert. We all have that place where no one can enter and where no one can hurt us. Our safe zone, where we can rest and rebuild ourselves again. Do you know what your safe place is? In my case, my refuge is ART. The only place where I feel complete, loved and free. Among so much chaos I was finally able to return to my safe place and repair myself.
