The birds sing each morning Greeting the day anew Stretching wings wide As they glide through Gardens sweetly scented by Incandescent blooms But this morning... Like a warning... They hesitate... They stifle their song They mutter and rasp Like a warning... They do not venture Through branches To skies open wide To dip and dive Under currents and glide They shelter in trees Shelter their faces With feathered wings Not made for these places They should be stretched wide As they conquer the skies Azure blue as the shine Of the conquerors eyes But the day feels like dusk Draped in violent rust Orange as sulphur And they suffer From ash and from dust Sum of greed and sum of lust But we trust No not me, not me It won't happen to me It's far over there 'Cross a distant sea No incentive to care Out of sight, Out mind Out of touch And so much Of subtle signs we see Will eventually be The totality Azure eyes that now stream Burning, raw from the ashes Of our grandchildren's home Smog now tightly catches And stifles the scream Like the song That we needed To echo the halls To bellow and break Our invisible walls There's no dew dotting petals Only ashes and dust The soil is bone dry The sky billowing rust We wait for relief To fall from the sky And wait with belief Even though we know why The birds have stopped singing The day becomes night And yet we self soothe It will all be alright Fresh blooms of young Milk-White Toothed Polypore emerge from a branch, engulfing a length of braided nylon twine that rests against the branch. (Irpex lacteus) The devastating violence being faced by the civilians in Gaza now and over the past 75 years in Palestine is finally reaching the minds of the world. I have served as witness, and have written poetry to reflect on what I have seen and heard, some of which is included in this series. In solidarity with the men, women and children of Gaza this series was created to raise funds for INARA, an organization that provides emergency medical relief in disaster areas around the globe. INARA is currently raising funds for their active effort to evacuate children with complex medical cases and to provide mental health support to first responders and educators remaining in Gaza during this period of crisis.
