The work "Web Profile Tree," revisiting Vincent van Gogh's "Head of a Peasant Girl with a Black Cap," offers a profound reflection on contemporary abstraction, duality, and the coexistence of artistic forms through time. This piece, which combines physical and digital painting with a minimalist architectural laminated structure, embodies a contemplative allegory around the notion of "profile," whether it be the web profile or the classical pictorial profile. These two concepts share a tree structure that determines their evolution, temporal generation, and genealogy, thus reflecting a form of continuity and transformation across the ages.
Artistic and Philosophical Conceptualization
- The Profile Tree:
The work explores the idea that profiles, whether digital or pictorial, are dynamic structures that evolve over time. Each profile is a constantly mutating entity, influenced by interactions, cultural contexts, and successive generations. By layering Van Gogh's original painting with acrylic and digital layers, I experiment with a visual genealogy that draws from the past to the present, while playing with perspectives and dimensions. This tree structure symbolizes how artworks, like digital profiles, are living entities that transform and reinterpret themselves over time.
- Subrealist Abstraction and Cubism:
The work is part of a subrealist abstraction approach, where realism is deconstructed to reveal more organic and emotional forms. Cubism, suggestive of the approach between geometry and flat volume, influences the composition, fragmenting perspectives and forms to create a tension between chaos and harmony. This tension is reinforced by the use of layered sofas, both physical and digital, which invite the viewer to explore the work's multiple dimensions. - The organic and human dimension:
I emphasize the importance of maintaining an organic, human-scale dimension in my work, particularly the modeling tools that, in this project, could distance me from the work and its emotional and sensitive essence. By using physical materials such as laminated cardboard, wood, and acrylic paint, combined with digital elements, I create a work that remains anchored in the tangible, while exploring the possibilities offered by modern technologies.
- Temporal transcendence:
Van Gogh's work, like that of many classical artists, has the ability to transcend time and cultural contexts. By reinterpreting this work, I pay homage to this transcendence, while exploring new ways of seeing and understanding art. This approach raises interesting questions about how works of art can continue to evolve and inspire, even centuries after their creation.
