Description

The term "Basileus" originates from ancient Greek, meaning "king" or "emperor." It was used extensively during the Byzantine Empire to denote the sovereign ruler. Etymologically, it derives from the Mycenaean Greek word "gʷasileus," initially referring to a chieftain or local leader before evolving to signify the emperor. The silver coin featuring the face of a Basileus, often an emperor like Constantine or Justinian, was minted as a symbol of their authority and divine right to rule. These coins were not only currency but also served as a medium to disseminate the emperor's image and consolidate power throughout the empire.
