Description

The algorithm stifles the signal. While the network overflows with bland data and celebrates standardized success, the reality of a cynical and individualistic world is silenced. To say nothing is to participate. I chose to code my own warning signal. wyswyw_flag is an introspective digital artwork and an act of resistance. It is an animated reinterpretation (80 frames at 12 fps) of a study by John Singer Sargent, crushed by the shadow of a black flag. The work is a direct response to and homage to John Gerrard's powerful Western Flag. But where Gerrard materialized our ecological exhaustion with a black smoke flag, wyswyw_flag materializes our mental and moral exhaustion. It is the banner of willful ignorance, carried by industrial percussion and a looping code terminal. The value of art lies not in its ability to pander to the market, but in its capacity to reject consensus. This is why this work finds its place on Tezos: a decentralized ecosystem where genuine artistic resilience, digital alchemy, and integrity take precedence over superficial prestige.
