The Trash genre is the only truly new movement to evolve from Digital Crypto Art. Its memetic mascot has become the ‘Toter’, a garbage bin by corporation Wastequip LLC; known as the humble wheelie bin in Australia. The Trash Art movement is defined by the principles of anti-copyright, decentralization, challenging norms; generally creative freedom. The overall theme could be objectively compared to Punk’s emergence from music in the 1970s. The fact it has been banned multiple times from digital Art platforms is, apart from testament to the consistent fear of anything new, signifying entry of an era of neo-conservatism creeping into society, thus leeching into the Arts. The Trash movement was founded and fostered in the digital realm, and has remained principally online, apart from a curated show in Paris ‘TRASHART: NFT GARBOLOGY ' at L'Avant Galerie Vossen in March 2022. https://avant-galerie.com/en/trashart-nft-garbology A global survey of Artists working in the genre was exhibited in an IRL gallery space and yet, all of the work was essentially still shown digitally. However I reverse the entire concept by bringing digital movement of Trash Art directly into the IRL space with installation of a physical work, displaying a wheelie bin from home in the gallery. This piece was exhibited in ‘The Way We Talk (About It)’, from Nov 26 - Dec 17 2022 at Brunswick Temporary, Melbourne. As far as I’m aware this is an Australian first; it is quite likely the first time a real garbage bin has been shown in a contemporary Art gallery in Australia. From Duchamp to Warhol and Dine, the ready-made as conceptual Art is far from a new idea, historically speaking, but the discussion is seemingly far from redundant.
