There is power in a moving image This is the moment when the Mermaid and I began to get more comfortable and explore movement. There is something about seeing your own shadow that makes you want to move. Is it instinct or impulse? Our mind is reminded that our body is here. She sees her shadow and is inspired to move. I see her shadow and I see her silhouette. I am inspired to capture it. To create. We now have proof that we were in fact here. In this space. In this moment. Much like standing before a mirror, we acknowledge our self. We acknowledge each other. There is immense power in this acknowledgement. From here we begin to explore something even more powerful, self-expression and collaboration. Recording the moment It's hard to imagine a time when the motion picture didn't exist. In 1826, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce took the first known photograph. Sixty-two years passed before Louis Le Prince invented the motion picture camera and the film industry was born. The title of Louis' first film is only 2.11 seconds long and titled Roundhay Garden Scene (1888). It depicts 5 people wandering around a garden. The end product could be described as "glitchy" due to the slow frame rate. Fast forward 130yrs and we have a growing movement dedicated to Glitch Art inspired by artifacts introduced by digital means. I did not plan for this moving image to be glitched. The effect was unintentionally introduced during post-processing and in my opinion adds to the aesthetic. Now we are really moving.
