Argyranthemum frutescens Common name: Marguerite Daisy Marguerite comes from the Greek word for pearl, margaretes, which is a strange name for a flower that grows everywhere and costs almost nothing. Margaret of Anjou used it as her personal emblem when she left France to become queen of England in 1445, and then led troops into battle during the War of the Roses with this flower on every banner. The French game of pulling petals one by one, effeuiller la marguerite, is older than most people realize and originally had nothing to do with romance, it was a fortune-telling practice that got softened over the centuries into a love game. When the Nazis invaded Denmark in 1940, Princess Margrethe was born the same year and jewellers across the country started making daisy brooches as an act of quiet resistance. Wearing one meant you were Danish first. The genus name Argyranthemum translates to silver flower, which is another odd choice for something so clearly golden at its center.
