Veronica persica Common names: Bird's-eye Speedwell, Common Field Speedwell, Persian Speedwell Veronica means true image. Vera icon. The name comes from the woman who wiped the face of Christ on his way to Calvary, and the cloth kept his likeness. St. Veronica became the patron saint of photographers, which is something most photographers don't know about. The markings on the petals, those blue veins running through lighter skin, were said to be traces of that same face. Speedwell was the common name, an old English way of saying goodbye and good luck at the same time, like something you'd say at a doorstep knowing the person might not come back. In Scotland and Ireland people sewed the flowers into their clothes before traveling as protection against accidents. Children in England called them bird's eyes and believed that picking one would make actual birds come and peck your eyes out, which is a terrifying piece of folklore for something this small. The petals drop almost immediately when picked, faster than almost any other wildflower, so the goodbye is built into the structure of the thing. Robert Burns drank tea made from speedwell leaves.
