Description

The Vermilion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus), known as “Churrinche” in Spanish, is a small passerine bird that belongs to the Tyrannidae family. It is widely distributed, with a range of approximately 7.1 million square kilometers, stretching from the southwestern regions of the United States down through Mexico and Central America, reaching as far south as Argentina. This bird is a sit-and-wait predator, hunting mainly insects. It spots prey from an open perch and catches it in swift, direct flights. Larger insects like grasshoppers and butterflies are taken back to the perch and beaten before eating. It may also catch prey mid-air or on the ground, often returning to the same perch after each attempt. January 7th, 2025.
