Contour is part of the series Aviary.

Aviary is about the possibilities offered through an abstraction of nature. Here the intricate architecture of a bird is stripped of its context and scale, to be re-presented with a silent beauty and vulnerability. The original photos are of living birds and were taken at a wildlife sanctuary.

Kynance Cove was driven from the earth’s crust hundreds of millions of years ago. Created by a sequence of eruptions, the stacked cliffs and caves and tunnels of this rare landscape are an unusually dramatic testament to geological power. Here we can see the evidence of molten crust and magma hurled through moving plates to the surface of the earth. These are unique layers of rock,  exposed in places as a reptilian multi-coloured, scaly sheen which may give it the name Serpentine. The series of colour manipulated works are intended as a tribute to a sense of energy and intense beauty which you can experience in the cove even on the dullest day.

This series is about the perpetual evolution of the earth’s crust, a surface compressed and manipulated by geological force and by the elements of water, wind and heat. From shifting tectonic plates and volcanic eruptions, to a drip of water imperceptibly carving through rock, these seemingly static formations are actually in permanent flux.

Geomorphology visualises the latent energy stored in these layers of minerals. Here the monolithic rock formations represent a history of geographical evolution. The opaque pools that form within this Illusory landscape are charged with energy and possibility, alluring portals that reach out to an uncharted terrain.

Vantage

The series Variegation is inspired by the nightlife of foliage, a glimpse of what we might see if our night vision had evolved exponentially. After the sun fades, the process of photosynthesis stops and respiration begins. Plants begin to burn their stored sugars, assimilating some of the precious oxygen they created during the day. In darkness growth continues, with careful calibration of the rate at which a plant’s fuel reserves are burnt. The colours I have used in this series represent the light absorbed into the plant’s structure and its conversion to energy. The title Variegation refers to the multiple colours across a plant’s leaves or stems - representing levels of chlorophyll in the plant directly affecting the gathering and burning of energy.

Kynance is an ongoing series which focusses on the extraordinary force of volcanic geology. In this landscape we are confronted with rare evidence of the colossal pressures which once created the surface of the earth. I am finding that lockdown has, for me, forced a shift of focus. While environmental and political change accelerates at an unprecedented rate, I am now looking at transformations which happened over a very different timescale. These images feature a terrain which would seem to be immutable, belying its turbulent and explosive past. The rock formations demonstrate a manifestation of the planet’s physical history: times of stability veined with turbulent change, fault lines which can be seen as a metaphor for our current human landscape.

This series is a photographic study of an intricate natural world, an ecology which thrives on clifftops, delicately anchoring itself into the crevices and facades of a stone wall scoured by wind and salty spray. This is a depiction of vibrant life against the odds, an incredible web of plants and insects and the elements, to which I give an interpretation of colour to represent the life and energy within this botanic realm.
