Visual artist from Austin, Texas, working with algorithms, plotters, and paints. Creator of Fidenza.

The inspiration for One One Overflow came from the meeting point of digital precision and analogue unpredictability. The core building block of the algorithm that generated this image is quite simple: try to place sequential dots along a line. What makes the results interesting are its departures from the perfect form. Small errors stack up and accumulate, cascading into divergent and unpredictable artifacts. This type of variation happens naturally in a medium like painting, but when working through an algorithm, it becomes a rare blessing.

Careless and Well-Intentioned

Starting with traditional art materials when he was young, Tyler Hobbs later found his way into creating images with code. Eventually, he stopped creating landscapes and portraits by hand and his work with code took center stage, but he never stopped working with traditional art materials. His graphite plotter drawings and hand-painted murals created from his code are essential elements of his work. For –GRAPH, Tyler has created “F(l)ight,” a study of the aesthetic overlap and differences between the natural world, hand-made artwork, and algorithmic tendencies. It’s a return to his long-standing interests in the continuum of representational images to total abstraction. In relation to his idea that code and algorithms become increasingly important within culture and art, Tyler says, “I am interested in what parts of the analog world we can capture, what we can improve, and what is lost.” 

“F(l)ight” is a software NFT, but the first collector of each edition will receive the corresponding plotter drawing shipped directly from the artist’s studio. Each software NFT includes millions of other images beyond the primary image for each edition. The software NFT and the plotter drawing aren’t linked together; the NFT can continue to be collected on a secondary market without the drawing. Click on the artwork or press the enter/return key to generate a new image with a different random seed value.

The image you see on the main artwork page on Feral File is the plotter drawing for the artist-proof (AP). Compare this image of the drawing to the corresponding software version of the AP to see how the software image and the plotted drawing are related. Because the artists are using a range of papers and inks, the software and physical drawings are delightfully different.  

The “F(l)ight” drawings are 40.6 × 50.8 cm (16 × 20 inches) on cream Stonehenge paper. They are drawn with a black archival ink pen.

I have the tremendous pleasure of announcing that the first book of my artwork, titled Order/Disorder, is now officially available for pre-order. This year, I crossed the 10-year anniversary of my first generative work. It feels so good to see that decade culminate in a book. For me, art books have been a massively important way to view and discover the work of other artists. I really treasure the format, so I have done my best to make this book top-notch.

The book covers a variety of my work from the last five years. I’ve also written three new, short essays. These are accompanied by a wonderful text by Melanie Lenz and an interview with Hans Ulrich Obrist. But most importantly of all, there are a huge number of high-quality art plates in there! I’m excited for you all to get to see it in person.

Order/Disorder, a collector's edition of 999, is now available for pre-order exclusively via Unit London Editions.

Structured around the concept of dualities, Order/Disorder explores my systematic approaches to art-making, the creative relationship between man and machine, computer-led aesthetics, and the interplay of repetition and emergence across long-form generative projects.

The collector’s edition is being sold on a first-come basis. This limited release features a premium cover, equipped with an NFC chip and autograph module, which allows you to register your limited edition and authenticate Tyler’s signature on the blockchain once received. QQL's #276 - #282 were minted during the QQL 1-Year Anniversary live mint party after careful curation by Tyler, Indigo and the QQL Council. It was our intention to mint a set of high quality QQLs that represented a full year of community effort, experimentation and creativity. In short, this is some of our favorite work that the community has produced with QQL, and it captures a good range of what the algorithm is capable of.

Each of these QQLs was minted from a seed created by a member of the QQL community, and they are now available as prints for anyone to purchase.

Normally, a QQL print could only be obtained by the owner of the QQL or the Parametric Artist who created the seed but for the Community Mints we felt that it was important to make the prints more widely accessible. Prints are often the ideal way to view QQL artwork, and we wanted to extend that opportunity to a wider audience. These works originated in the community, so it was important to us to offer these back as a thank you to all that participated in making QQL what it is.
