Our first time visiting Emerald Lake was like a dream...  We arrived early that morning in our adventure van, hopped out, and explored the lake's shores for hours during a fantastic sunrise.  The blue and green hues of the water were rivaled only by the soft pink glow of the clouds above.  All around were mountains and trees, and the entire spot felt like it was part of some whimsical wilderness painting!

No Ceiling

Since our first ancestors shattered rocks to create hunting tools, technology has been an essential part of the human experience.  Throughout the centuries, we’ve woven it into our lives, increasing our reliance on our mind’s creations while boosting our own odds of survival.  We’ve embedded machines into every aspect of our lives, and we’ve become comfortable…  Yet despite that familiarity, we stand upon the brink;  our own technology will soon bend and crack reality itself.  Nanotechnology, augmented reality, virtual metaverses, all these things may leave our minds reeling, broken and unable to discern between a rocky mountain vista and an array of ones and zeroes…

Liquidity I:  Verdant

You know those moments in life that you just wish you could replay over and over in your mind, in perfect fidelity?  The ones where you don't want to blink, for fear of missing even a fraction of a millisecond?  This is one of mine.

I spent many long hours out at Gold Pond in Washington capturing the Aurora Borealis (as well as the Milky Way) while my wife was asleep in the back of our converted camper van.  It was the first and only time (so far) that I've seen the aurora with my naked eye!  Even if it was just a faint glow on the horizon, it was a memory I'll not soon forget.

Quick explanation of timelapse process:  Set up sturdy tripod and camera; choose visually appealing framing; take some test shots to find a suitable exposure (I usually overexpose initially, for sunset timelapses); use an intervalometer with above settings, preferablly wireless with remote shutter.  When finished, import to Lightroom and use a timelapse suite (such as LRTimelapse) to assemble. Use keyframes to adjust exposure blending.  Export to mp4.

Torrey Pines Sunset (Workflow Series #1)

There are some who say our universe operates like clockwork, or better yet, like a game of billiards.  Each piece moves according to a set of discrete rules, affected by what came before it, onward and upward and backward in time, until we reach a philosophical singularity:  Who (or what) did the original moving?  
  
The answer, of course, will likely elude us until whatever the opposite of a Big Bang is comes to pass.  Wars have been fought over it, friendships and families foresaken and lost, and what for?  
  
This timelapse video was shot in one of my favorite places on our planet, Yosemite National Park.  I crouched there on the banks of the Merced River in the dark, watching as late-night arrivals drove through.  Later on, I realized that I'd captured a fun (but not all that rare) atmospheric phenomenon:  Airglow!

Prime Mover

I've only had the chance to capture the aurora on camera a handful of times in my life.  The first was an accidental capture up in the Adirondacks (this was a classic "oops, I didn't shoot in RAW" moment).  The second was at a tiny pond in Washington state.  Neither of those times, though, was I fortunate enough to see the dancing lights with my own eyes.  
  
Imagine my surprise when I was able to drive mere minutes from my home in upstate New York, capture some lovely dancing lights in a timelapse, and see it with my own eyes as well!  It was definitely a paradigm shift in my thinking;  all those pretty pictures I saw suddenly made sense to me, now that I had experienced it!  The colors aren't as vibrant to the naked eye as they are on camera, but you still get a sense of them (despite what anybody says about rods and cones not being sensitive enough to detect them).  It was like waking up from a lucid dream straight into reality!

Dreaming California

When I'm feeling lost, I like to remember that life's path for each of us is like a flowing river.  There are unique bends and curves to the rushing torrents, and there are obstacles that get in the way (or even block it completely at times).  Of course, we can try our hardest to change the course of things, tossing in boulders, building dams, and digging up shorelines...  But in the end, it probably won't make much of a difference.  
  
Instead, I try to remember to pay attention to the minor details, the bubbles, the roar of turbulent spray.  Every moment, every little side story, every missed exit and heartfelt smile...  They're what really make up the river, and they're what your story really consists of.

As an ape-like creature living on a watery magma rock circling a ball of nuclear hellfire, I struggle a lot with time.  I think we all probably do.  As a kid, the future is vast and infinite, and as you grow older, you realize that might not always be the case.  Then you realize that it's definitely not the case.  THEN you realize that not only is your own life limited, but EVERYTHING is limited in timespan.  
  
And that's fine.  
  
The universe is still all about balance, and even here we can see it.  All good things must come to an end, yes, but the same is true for all the bad (or at least inconvenient) things too.  Every stop light you're stuck at eventually turns to green.  Every downturn in the economy reverses after a while.  And yes...

It would probably amuse some of you to know that when I took this photo (and a few others you've probably seen), I was experiencing immense joy and relief!  We knew this hike was a long one, and we were planning to camp out overnight.  We'd packed everything we could think of (our backs and knees did not appreciate this unkindness), and I was responsible for a lot of it, including a water filter.  
  
Narrator:  "He did not, in fact, pack the water filter."  
  
We figured this out many hours in, when our water bottles were completely emptied due to our thirst in the hot sun.  My wife and I were worried we'd have to cancel the best views and head back to our car, but I was having none of that.  At one of the picnic areas by a picturesque lake, there was a well-equipped family having lunch.  I swallowed my pride, introduced myself and our predicament, and asked them humbly if we could use their water filter.  They agreed, and gave us an extra bottle of water (they were only there for a day trip).  
  
Without that family's kindness (and yes, that fortuitous lunch encounter!), my destiny would have been forever altered.  I wouldn't have captured the Tent Photo or Loom, I wouldn't have posted it to a popular photo app and become insta-famous (for a day), I wouldn't have dived so deeply into photography (and later NFTs), and I wouldn't be here writing this caption to explain it all!  
  
Please enjoy this image from that hike as a reminder to be kind, and to be humble, and to always remember your water filter!

Our hike to the iconic **Trolltunga** (or "Troll's tongue") vista took us about 6 hours, and we were hampered and dampened by rain the entire time.  Fortunately, Thor wasn't around that day, so there wasn't any lightning or thunder!  
  
There weren't many other travelers there either (due to the rain), so we had the place to ourselves for a while.  I can't recall the word for the visceral fear of death you get when you're out at the edge of a rock staring down at a thousand-foot drop...  But it's on the tip of my tongue.

Speaking In Tongues

Norway...  The land of trolls and fjords.  Diverse landscape of islands, mountains, beaches, forests, and glaciers.  Friendly people, but sometimes unforgiving weather.  Any photographer's paradise, any traveler's must-visit destination, and any hiker's trekking dream...  
  
Backstory:  About ten months after my wife and I got married, we visited fabulous Norway on our honeymoon.  We'd been talking about it for years, and we had the time off, so why not make a trip out of it?  But this wasn't going to be the typical lavish newlywed vacation, no...  We planned an epic three-week journey to the north of the country and back, camping and hiking all along the way!  
  
**Norway Up High** is my own take on a travel memoir.  These hikes and viewpoints were the first time I was surrounded by this much natural beauty, and my fondest memories of it were all from the highest points we reached.  Join me as I show you ten of my favorite vertiginous views!

The green hills and valley views of **Romsdalseggen** were among the many recommendations we got from the locals in nearby Åndalsnes.  We were told that the hike would take us the better part of the day, but that it would be worth it for the photos alone!  
  
What they didn't tell us was that a large section of the hike was a near-vertical scramble up some steep rock cliffs, with only some old chains to prevent us from falling to our certain doom!  Okay, maybe that's exaggerating, but to us city-dwellers, this place certainly felt rugged and adventurous.

I started with photography, but don't be surprised if there are videos, audio, collabs, 3D stuff, weird things you never even dreamed of...   

On even the most mundane of nights, we look up to the starry sky and wonder just exactly what's going on, and where we fit into all of this.  It's beautiful in its own way, with the familiar constellations and the hazy glow of the Milky Way up there, comforting us with immensity and unknowable mystery.  It's immense.  It's universal.  
  
When the Aurora Borealis comes out to dance, however, I'd argue that it's a bit more intimate.  Think about it.  Our own planet and star have their own celestial marvel, flittering and waving in the sky above us!  How cool is that!?  By some cosmic providence, we have just the right amount of plasma and magnetism for a light display that never fails (well, occasionally fails) to dazzle our eyeballs and minds!

Celestial Wonder

We're told by physicists that 98% of the atoms in our body get replaced every year, swapped out for new ones imperceptibly, and yet we remain ourselves.  But something has to be changing, right?  We're less like Theseus' ship and more like an iconic waterfall;  sure, the grand design looks similar moment to moment, but time inevitably takes its toll and breaks down the underlying substrate in the end.  What does that make us, then?  Are we only ghosts in the flow?

Flow

Pull up a driftwood log and have a seat.  There's something you need to know.  Almost nothing in this world is permanent;  whether it's a campfire, or an ocean wave, or a distant island eroding away, entropy will have its day eventually.  Things that exist in our reality are subject to strict thermodynamic house rules.  You and I can't change that, but we can do one thing to push back against it:  Create.  Make new things of beauty, illuminating this place with a spark that only you can ignite.

It's easy to imagine a chaotic cosmos;  all around us, we see evidence that the universe itself is anything but benign.  Asteroid impacts, extinction events, the ever-looming threat of gamma ray bursts from distant galaxies...  
  
But it's a bit harder to think about unexpected events springing up from a source closer to home:  Us.  
  
We already know the human brain is one of the most complex and intricate physical objects in the universe;  multiply the possibilities of a single human by 7 billion, and you start to understand the magnitude of the situation.  A thousand million billion brain cells at work, all resulting in social norms and societal rules that appear organic but are anything but.  
  
In this delicate chaos, the goal is and only ever could be simple:  To survive.

This astro timelapse of Delicate Arch in Utah is of special significance to me.  My wife and I were on the road living out of a van, and we decided to spend a few days in Moab.  This night, we parked at the trailhead, she took a nap in the back of the vehicle, and I set out on the short but winding hike to the geological feature.  I used no headlamp, guiding myself by memory using the light of the stars.  

When I arrived there, I wasn't as alone as I thought;  about a dozen other photographers were out shooting that night, wandering around the sandy slopes with headlamps and tripods.  It wasn't easy to time any decently lit shots without distracting light trails in them!  Little did I know that I'd miss that night dearly soon after...  
  
Later that year, light painting was banned in the park, with only Low Level Lighting allowed from that point forward.  This restriction makes this video (and the still images it's comprised of) truly rare.

Delicate Chaos

To many of us, the night sky is a source of inspiration, peace, calm.  We gaze up at the stars, comforted by their beautiful glow, soothed by the fact that they're so, so far away.  That last thought remains hidden behind the curtains of subconscious, of course...  Whatever threats or horrors exist on countless planets orbiting countless stars in our universe, they're made benign by distance.  
  
We live on our little planet, our ideal bubble, padded on all sides by the vastness and incomprehensible distances of space.  I think this fact eases us all, decreasing our collective anxiety and allowing us to focus on more pressing issues like parking meters and grizzly bears.  But what if, by some miracle of technology, this distance were made irrelevant?  If we could boldly go elsewhere, or if visitors could come here instantly?  Well... This panorama shot means a lot to me;  it was one of the few times my father came with me on a nighttime photographic adventure.  We were staying in Canmore, and we'd both read about grizzly bears in the area, so he insisted that he come out with me that night for the quarter mile hike to this spot.  You know, to keep me safe.  
  
I happily accepted, and he got to see me in my element, snapping long exposures of the stars above an impressive mountain range.

Our hike to the iconic **Trolltunga** (or "Troll's tongue") vista took us about six hours, and we were hampered and dampened by rain the entire time.  Fortunately, Thor wasn't around that day, so there wasn't any lightning or thunder!  
  
There weren't many other travelers there either (due to the rain), so we had the place to ourselves for a while.  I can't recall the word for the visceral fear of death you get when you're out at the edge of a rock staring down at a thousand-foot drop...  But it's on the tip of my tongue.

While this may seem like a beautiful little hidden lake with fog-shrouded waterfalls and fantasy novel vibes, it's actually the far end of the massive **Ringedalsvatnet** lake, which is the same body of water that can be seen from the Trolltunga viewpoint.  We paused nearby while on the trail to admire the vastness of the landscape, and to gawk at the snow-covered mountains and hills beyond.  Our trip to the land of trolls and fjords took place in the middle of summer, so we were quite surprised to see any snow at all!  
  
As I munched on a granola bar, I pondered whether anybody had made the hazardous trek down the rocky cliff faces to the waters below.  Only much more recently did I actually look it up;  there are photos from those gravel shores from the early 1900s!  Apparently it's not too difficult to get there by boat from the other end of the lake.

Wayside Oasis

We humans are in a symbiotic relationship, whether we know it or not, from the very moment we're born.  With what, you might ask?  Well, the answer's easy:  With light itself.  
  
From our first moments out of the womb, we're grappling with the concepts of light and shadow.  At first, we use them to interpolate what's what in our unfamiliar three-dimensional world.  Soon enough though, we start to use them as metaphorical tools, methods of deception or revelation.  Who hasn't played hide-and-seek, ducking into a dark corner away from prying eyes, all the while observing the seeker's futile attempts?  Who hasn't shined a flashlight and found that thing they were looking for?  
  
These electromagnetic waves have made their mark on us, and we owe much of our very existence to them.

I captured this image on Second Beach during one of my first beach camping experiences.  We made a makeshift flood barrier out of driftwood and sand (as if that could have worked!), and by sheer luck our tent was dry in the morning.  Of course, tides weren't the only enemy that night;  ask me some time about my midnight encounter with a couple of raccoons...

Moonlit Solace

It's easy to understand how some places reach superstar status among influencers and travelers alike.  Sure, you might have a friend who knows a great local hike with some nice views, but how can that compare to the Valley of the Ten Peaks?  

At the end of the day though, it's all just information entering our optic nerve and being processed by our brain, right?  What makes this particular alignment of craggy summits more appealing than a field of grass and rocks in northeast Iowa?  Is there something inherently more beautiful, more spiritually moving, more substantial going on here?  It's all the electromagnetic equivalent of 1's and 0's entering our eyeballs, so why is this scene more dazzling than a used car lot in New Jersey?  
  
These are the things I think about when I visit places of wonder.

But A Dream

Onward

In early 2021, I made a solo trip to Taughannock Falls to clear my head.  It had been about a year since the pandemic started, and I needed to see something more majestic than the well-walked routes in my city neighborhood.  When I got to the trailhead parking lot, I was worried the ice and snow would mean I'd be spending the night;  there wasn't a soul around to tow me out or ask for help.  Despite that thought, I got my snow gear and camera backpack on and trudged throw the drifts all the way to the falls.  
  
What I found when I got there was right out of a fantasy novel (or perhaps TV series)!  The falls was still flowing, but it was surrounded by frosty build-up from the non-stop spray.  The rocks and ice downstream were covered in fresh snow, and I walked out onto some safe-looking spots to get the best angle.  After a couple hours shooting in the cold and solitude, my mind was indeed clear as an icicle.

Frozen Solace

It was a warm summer night at Glacier Point in Yosemite as I gathered my night lens and tripod and headed out into the darkness.  My wife was asleep in our converted camper van, resting peacefully while I set off in search of astrophotographic gems (as was our custom during our 2017 vanlife roadtrip).  
  
I walked over to the crowds of avid photographers shooting Half Dome that night, and I decided I'd wait until a bit later to let the crowds thin out to caputure that particular shot.  Instead, I wandered around the paths and walkways up there without a headlamp, enjoying the night air, until I saw the Milky Way high above a stand of evergreen trees.

Alone In A Crowd

Temporal Resolution

There are moments and places in our lives that we claim to "remember as if it were yesterday". A first kiss; a last dinner with college roommates; and yes, even an idyllic waterfall in the middle of the desert. These things sear themselves into our memory, and there they will by their very nature remain. The next romantic encounter will be some ordinal number greater than one, the next meal with those same people will be with acquaintances as opposed to housemates, and the waterfall itself will have eroded a few inches (or in some cases, been completely transformed by floods in the intervening years). There's never a way to go back to the way things were the first time, and it often produces in us a feeling of nostalgia, even while the moments happen...

Shifting Constant

The first piece in my Temporal Resolution series, wherein I mint a 1/1 every time gas is low this year!

It's always been my dream to have augmented senses.  Who wouldn't want to be able to hear a pin drop from a mile away, or see marauders carrying your friends over the hills of a fantasy world from ten times that?  
  
But when I think about enhanced sensory perception, I always come back to timelapses.  I want to be able to view, natively, with my own eyes, the passage of time.  I want to stare up at the night sky and see a long exposure, or even better, the motion of the stars, in their full circumpolar glory through the haze of time passing.  
  
Alas, a man can dream...

Temporal Haze

On even the most mundane of nights, we look up to the starry sky and wonder just exactly what's going on, and where we fit into all of this. It's beautiful in its own way, with the familiar constellations and the hazy glow of the Milky Way up there, comforting us with immensity and unknowable mystery. It's immense. It's universal.

When the Aurora Borealis comes out to dance, however, I'd argue that it's a bit more intimate. Think about it. Our own planet and star have their own celestial marvel, flittering and waving in the sky above us! How cool is that!? By some cosmic providence, we have just the right amount of plasma and magnetism for a light display that never fails (well, occasionally fails) to dazzle our eyeballs and minds!

Celestial Wonder (Open Edition)

Exactly one year ago today (as I type this), some buddies of mine in a group chat on Twitter were talking about something amazing in the skies that night. No, not a once-in-a-lifetime comet or a lunar eclipse or a supernova; earlier that week, there was intense solar activity, resulting in Kp 6 strength Aurora Borealis potential!

The subject of geology is, by its very nature, truly fascinating. Whether it's catastrophic events that happened on the planet or environmental forces governed all manner of physical laws, the very state of the stones (and water and magma and air...) allows us to understand what has happened in a given place, if only we know how to read the landscape itself. Our planet is its own guidebook and instruction manual, with enough prior knowledge. This has me wondering, of course...

On an alien planet, with biomes and landscapes far different from our own, would we need to re-learn the entirety of geology just to understand even the first glimpses of what we'd see there?

The twisting and winding scenery of The Wave definitely feels like another planet. It's very easy to get lost among the Navajo Sandstone formations and the startlingly similar crevices and hills. Bring your wits and plenty of water!

Time Lines

Peace and quiet aren't easy to come by these days. The constant complexity of life, combined with the new added layers of stress that come from being constantly online, constantly accessible, constantly in-the-know... These things add up.

Liquidity IV:  Reticent

You are very small. If you've visited redwood trees up close, then you probably understand. You're not just small in a physical sense, cowering there under the towering bark and canopies high above, but you're also small in a temporal sense. These trees have been around since before your great-great-grandparents were the spark of a thought, and they'll be around when your great-great-grandchildren forget your name and need to use whatever genealogy sites exist in the future to look it up.

A few years back, I had the chance to spend a few long nights out in the Alabama Hills, camping, stargazing, and practicing the craft of astrophotography. I didn't see any UFOs while I was there, but I *did* see the breathtaking expanse of the Milky Way stretching up above me and the old dirt road that winds its way through the area.

Last Pale Light

We've all heard the phrase "Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in morning, sailors take warning."... But have you ever really thought about it?

How could one simple adage, with a couple of binary statements, be true everywhere at all times? I'd imagine the saying started in England or Europe or the Mediterranean, but does it hold true around the coasts of Africa or Australia? What about Cape Horn, home of some of the worst maritime weather on the planet? And do the sun's light's refracting rays and cloud colors really predict inclement weather in Maine, or the Gulf Coast, or, say, the Pacific Northwest?

These are some of the questions I didn't ponder while I stood there on Second Beach, barefoot with a tripod, taking in one of the finest sunsets of my life. Sometimes, you just need to revel in the after glow.

After Glow

Pastel Glow

We visited Norway on our honeymoon, a full year after the wedding. We rented a car and just drove, stopping at all the most famous spots... Kjerag, Preikestolen, Trolltunga... But the places that amazed us the most were the quiet ones, the lonely stops by the wayside (or in this case, at the end of a dock on a secluded lake). These moments are propagated forward in our memories, like discrete waves in still waters.

Screen Time

Home. It's a concept that's sometimes hard to define. To some, it means a wooden structure where belongings are kept and nights are slept. To others, it's more metaphorical; being surrounded by friends and family, with hearts brimming full of love.

My own personal definition involves our planet and the cosmos; I look up at the stars and realize that this place, this planet full of breathable air and drinkable water and life, is where we begin, and where we should return to if the entirety of existence gets to be too much to bear.
