From 8 October 2015–3 January 2016, the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis museum in The Hague, the Netherlands, exhibited 27 self-portraits of famous seventeenth century painters. The exhibition was entitled 'Dutch Self-Portraits of the Golden Age’.

Michiel van Musscher (1645-1705) was a quick-learning painter who was born in Rotterdam, worked for some time in Haarlem, and then lived in Amsterdam for most of the rest of his life. His 'Self-Portrait' of 1673, is today part of the Leiden Collection.

This imaginary self-portrait, is painting #23 in the exhibition's catalogue, and the second of three new portraits of Michiel van Musscher.

Michiel van Musscher (1645-1705) was a quick-learning painter who was born in Rotterdam, worked for some time in Haarlem, and then lived in Amsterdam for most of the rest of his life. His 'Self-Portrait' of 1685, today hangs at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and shows the artist framed by allegorical iconography.

Godfried Schalcken (1643-1706) lived in Leiden and Dordrecht for most of his life. He is perhaps best known for his candlelit scenes that show off his skills at chiaroscuro. His 'Self-Portrait' of c. 168790/1700 is today part of the Dordrechts Museum.
