Wheelchair Graveyard

St. Michael's Medical Center, Newark NJ.  
The St. Mike’s chapel, which is arguably one of the most beautiful historic chapels in the Northeast USA, was built in the late 1880’s, as part of an extension to the original hospital building. But eventually over many years, multiple newer buildings were constructed on campus, which resulted in the eldest building, and extension, being left abandoned. It has sat empty and decaying for approximately 30 years, until now. The building has finally been purchased and is in the midst of extensive restorations. The future “Newark Arts Commons,” will house spaces for arts education, art studios, artist housing, an art gallery for the artists to sell their work, and the chapel will be used as a common area lounge and activity center for residents. When abandoned places are restored, it is always bittersweet. As explorers, we lose a piece of our playground, but at the same time, we are happy for the building to receive a second life. And in this case, the building has been dedicated to the arts, so it doesn’t get much sweeter than that. I can’t wait to return one day, to see the transformation.

Transcendence

There is nothing better than walking into an abandoned place to find remnants of the past. The precious junk I find tells the story of what once was. As I walked into this particular home, it was mostly empty except for the TV, and it was so cute. As I started shooting, I quickly became enthralled with the crack in the wall behind it, something that an average person may have overlooked. But I am an explorer of history and decay, and it is tiny delights like these, that make my day.

In a field where echoes of departure sigh,  
Two giants rest, beneath open sky.  
Nose to nose, they stand with quiet grace,  
Tales of flight, time cannot erase.

Once they soared on wings of silver gleam,  
Through clouds and sunsets, chasing a dream.  
Now grounded on a runway worn and bare,  
They share a solemn, ghostly air.

In close quarters, a rendezvous of fate,  
They patiently stand, time slowly abates.  
Their metal frames, like sentinels in despair,  
Awaiting a fate that seems so unfair.

Each rivet, each bolt, a witness of the past,  
A mosaic of journeys, their difference, so vast.  
Abandoned, yet graceful, they patiently wait,  
For hands to salvage, to rejuvenate.

Piece by pieces, as parts are sold,  
They wish for a narrative retold.  
Nose to nose, in silent yearn,  
For one more flight, for one more turn.

"Abandoned Hospitals and Asylums" is a collection of photos taken from inside some of the most notorious forsaken hospitals and asylums, across the USA and Italy. Countless hours of research, flying and/or driving, combined with gaining access to these off-limits spaces, contribute to their mysterious intrigue.

The collection was captured over 6 years and includes photos from some of my riskiest, adrenaline pumping explores to date. Each hospital holds unique and often dark stories from it’s active existence, while shedding light on past and present mental health treatments.

At present, some of these hospitals have collapsed or been demolished, which means they will never again be photographed in their bewitchingly, broken state. These select photos have now become a piece of history and serve as a reminder to treat those suffering from mental illness with empathy and compassion.

As a follow up to the open edition “AutoBlooms” collection, this is my genesis 1/1 artificial intelligence art collection. “Bloomin Bandos” is a continued exploration of beauty in decay versus the colourful, liveliness of the flower world. It features different types of abandoned buildings, being taken over by beautiful canopies of different coloured flowers. The collection is largely inspired by the places and things I have seen during my travels, mixed with the whimsical, colourful delights of my imagination. I hope you enjoy!

"Decayed Dreams" is an AI art piece seeded from a photo of an abandoned palace that I explored in Italy, on my honeymoon in 2019. When I explore abandoned places, I always imagine what life would have been like for the inhabitants during the building's heyday. I imagine where the furniture would be set up, what kind of chores would have to be done, what the people did in their spare time and what their clothing would have looked like. I often wonder why people have to leave these beautiful architectural gems behind, and sometimes I put the research in to find out. Sadly, it's not usually a happy ending.

Lessons Learned

It was a beautiful sunny morning, and we had just had dinner with some French explorers the night before. We were in a good mood and excited to get our day started. We stopped at a grocery store to grab some breakfast and ate it on the way to our first spot. When we pulled up, the little chateau was set back from the road in between some other buildings that lined the sidewalk. We hiked through a wooded area and some tall grasses around the back and went inside the château to explore and photograph it. When we were done, we made our way out the same way we entered. Once we were outside the gate and safely on the sidewalk, we sent the drones up. This was the first fly with my new drone, after I had lost my old drone to a tree the day before. As we were flying, my husband saw a tiny tick on his drone controller. My stomach dropped. Ticks are an explorer’s worst nightmare. They live in tall grasses looking for a host to feed off of, and certain kinds of ticks can give humans Lyme disease. When we landed the drones, we quickly checked all our clothes to see if we had any crawling on us. We didn’t, so we went about our day as usual. Later in the evening when we got to our AirBNB, I was about to hop in the shower when I noticed what I thought was a tiny spec of dirt on the front of my thigh and I tried to brush it off. It didn’t move. I looked closer, and sure enough, it was a tick - smaller than a sesame seed. This meant we would have to search our clothes, suitcases, car, and AirBNB to make sure we didn’t find anymore. Additionally, at this point in the evening, all the shops were closed, so we couldn’t go buy tweezers to pull the tick off me. I was freaking out. My husband ended up having to pinch two butter knives together to pull it out of my skin. And I spent a good hour or so reading up on tick bites to see if I could calm my anxiety. Luckily, I learned that in most cases, if you get the tick off within 24 hours, you have a very small chance of contracting Lyme. So that made me feel better, but I still had to monitor myself for symptoms of Lyme disease for the next 30 days. Thankfully, I was fine, and this ended up being one of my favorite châteaus of the trip, regardless of the tick bite.

This beautiful historic château sits, locked up tight, right beside a commune in central France. Before visiting, we were warned by French explorers that a man from the commune, who is not very nice, would probably ask us to leave, even if we were on public property. So being a new drone pilot who just lost her first drone to a tree the day before, I was very nervous, as this flight would have to be done quickly. As we arrived, my husband and I decided to collaborate on this flight as it would be faster to put one drone up. He flew his drone quickly and we communicated together to find some great compositions from the air, including this one. We were then able to make a quick getaway without being bothered, and once at home, I completed the photo editing. This piece is our first collaboration on the blockchain, and I have a feeling there might be more to come. Chasing abandoned places around the world is our shared passion, and he has been an inspiration to me since day one. My husband is truly my best friend and partner in “grime.”
