Episode1-Anticyclone

Episode 1: Anticyclone by William Mapan

Release date: April 29, 2022 Platform: Artblocks Curated Mint style: Dutch auction (no rebate) Resting mint price: 0.75ETH (~$2,000 at the time)

"Anticyclones are a weather phenomena. They pierce through darkness to instill peace and calm. Their planetary scale reminds us of how little we are and how powerful they can be. High pressure, rotation, air flow… The "Anticyclone" series is an artistic exploration and interpretation of those concepts. The rendering borrows its aesthetics from traditional and organic media like paper and crayons, to lend an analog/archival look. 'Can a computer draw like a human?' The question is asked and challenged once more through 'Anticyclone'". -William Mapan

Collector's Corner - The Premier NFT Art Podcast

Most Impactful Categories: Guide, Time, Name

Best Guide traits: Guide 1, Guide 30, Guide 100, Guide 3/4/5 if fully filled or with a symmetric filling pattern (e.g. "window" guide 3s)

Hidden traits: Fully filled out Guide 3, 4, and 5; symmetric guide 3, 4, and 5

Best Time traits: Night, Unknown

Best Name traits: Billie, Nzinga, Elizabeth, Ada (although there are many more)

Impressions: There truly are no bad picks in this collection and the market has reacted explosively to what is on it's way to becoming a blue-chip (many say it is one tier below). Although every piece is beautiful, the categories and traits above command a premium in the market and are visually distinct. When considering a purchase, these are targets we believe could grow in value relative to other pieces in the collection. The market is has traditionally undervalued the guide 10s and some named palettes, as well as hidden traits such as fully-filled guide 3s and symmetric guide 3 / 4 / 5. We believe these could be good targets for the mid to long term.

Impressions: A beautiful work of art and technical feat that has been many years in the making. Meridian is one of those collections that you simply need to look at to appreciate why it's so popular. It ranks high on aesthetics and causes a resonance with many collectors due to the natural look and feel of the shapes. Like many excellent works and performances Matt DesLauriers makes an extremely complex process look easy. Well loved by collectors and continuing to gain popularity (as evidenced by steadily rising floor prices and decreasing supply), we believe this collection has a very positive outlook and would be a feather in any generative art collector's cap.

Episode 3: Deca

Deca is an online gallery company building a social experience around displaying and sharing NFT art. They have taken an innovative approach from the start by allowing users to showcase NFTs from any wallet, not just their own. Since then they have released a few innovative features and many of collectibles that have us very excited.

Top of the list is the ability to create token gated communities in a very simple, no-code way - it literally takes 5 minutes. Don't get us wrong, you still have to be web3 native to do this (e.g. find the contract address of the NFT or coins that gate your community), but it is far easier to spin up a community as a creator in Deca compared to Discord or Telegram.

Why is this so important? The easier it is to create a community, aka to organize your tribe, the more communities will form. We believe this user experience is so much better than the status quo that it will be copied across web3, similar to browser wallets such as Metamask becoming ubiquitous for sign in.

We believe there will be more token gated communities than open communities because creators and leaders want to curate an experience, and that's harder to do when anyone on the internet can join and potentially troll or ruin the experience.

Episode 4: Memories of Qilin by Emily Xie

"Memories of Qilin is inspired by traditional East Asian art. It channels the sense of movement and fluidity found in classical Chinese brushwork, while drawing from the colors, patterns, and forms of ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The series explores elements of folklore, evoking the mythological imagery of dragons, phoenixes, flowers, and mountains. The title references a fabled chimerical beast found throughout East Asian mythology (while the qilin is its Chinese name, it is also known in Korea as the girin and Japan as the kirin) that represents prosperity and luck.Viewers are invited to interpret elusive forms that verge on representation. As with the stories passed on through generations, each piece is imagined, organic, and ever-in-flux." - Emily Xie

Episode 6: Ringers by Dmitri Cherniak

There are an almost infinite number of ways to wrap a string around a set of pegs. On the surface it may seem like a simple concept but prepare to be surprised and delighted at the variety of combinations the algorithm can produce. Each output from 'Ringers' is derived from a unique transaction hash and generated in Javascript in the browser. Feature variations include peg count, sizing, layout, wrap orientation, and a few colorful flourishes for good measure. - Dmitri Cherniak

Summary

Gazers is an incredibly nuanced and well thought out collection. Don't take our word for it though, just take a look at the metadata - there are 78 categories! Of course we cover the top ones but there are many more we expect to emerge and hold differential value.

That's why we were so happy to have our great friend Virtau join us for this episode. He is an expert on Gazers, as well as being an active member of their community and an avid collector.

I want to highlight two very unique aspects of this collection. The first is the use of time. I haven't seen another generative art project that has thought through how the nfts change over time, both in the past and in the future. For example, Gazers are a dynamic image, rather than static, and all of them speed up their frame rate after some months (some faster than others).

Additionally, the Gazer's community is simply amazing. They have rallied around this masterpiece and have created a culture of it's own. I know very few collectors who are more passionate than the Gazer's community, which helped me realize how important this really is for the long term viability and price of a collection.

  • Sentiment - Very positive before the launch, immediately after, and has persisted
  • Collectors - Well regarded, thoughtful, generative art focused collectors, institutions, and artists have all spoken highly of and collected this project
  • Historic significance - too early to say, but given Matt's continuous refinement of his craft this collection may one day be seen as a precursor to a masterpiece
  • Artist - Matt is amazing at communicating his craft and engaging with his community. This bodes well for his future collections
  • Aesthetics / visuals - Simply stunning. Truly beautiful pieces that bring a feel of nature and nostalgia.
  • Collection breadth - Fantastic. It's hard to imagine so many outputs come from the same algorithm. An engineering and artistic feat.
  • Most impactful trait categories: Chromacity, Palette, Structure, Style, Zoom

Best traits within categories: Chromacity: Monochrome (rarity) Palette: Multiple with price premiums based on aesthetics moreso than rarity Structure: Variable (more rare with a price premium) Style: Multiple with price premiums based on aesthetics moreso than rarity Zoom: No significant rarity or price premium

Hidden traits: There has not been any clear collector behavior for traits not currently in the metadata.

Right now the front-end experience for Deca is creating and sharing galleries with the ability to chat and interact with NFTs - you can think of this as web3 Pinterest. Where else could they take it? They have a lot of options, but they have noted their ambitions to create a "graph" of NFTs and increase NFT discoverability. Could they become the best search platform for NFTs, effectively a web3 Google for NFTs? Possibly. They have also talked about becoming a digital storefront, a better way to find NFTs you might want than Opensea.

As many collectors know, the first company or project to do something innovative will gain historical significance and often a lot of value (Cryptopunks, chromie squiggles, autoglyphs, etc.). If that's the case, some of Deca's collectibles could hold significant value in the future. Again, it's too early to say, but for collector's who believe this thesis, this could be a good time to dive in.

How should you gain conviction on this thesis? First off we highly recommend you sign up for a Deca account, play around with the features, and even click through the process of creating a community to see how it works. Our episode (best viewed on Youtube) goes over how to do this. If your experience on Deca and this thesis resonates, then you could consider collecting some of the pieces below.

  • Aesthetics - This is where Memories excels. The visuals are extremely well done with a wonderful blend of colors and patterns combined with imagery that keeps you looking for more

  • Artist - We find Emily to be a very charismatic and engaging artist. She clearly knows how to develop her community, which bodes well for her collectors.

  • Holders - There is a wide range of holders who are known to be well regarded and influential, including the well known artist Thomas Lin Pederson and notable collectors such as DC Investor, Blockbird, and FlamingoDAO to name a few.

  • Sentiment - Consistently positive, both in the quality and quantity of sentiment, which has lasted the test of time,

  • Collection breadth - Another area where Memories excels. The collection has an impressive range of outputs that feel unique, yet it's clear that they are all from the same code. Masterfully done.

  • Historic significance - too early to say, but given how early we are in the long form generative art NFT journey and the unique style employed by Emily, we think this has potential to influence subsequent works

  • Price action - price has continued to rise despite major fluctuations in macro conditions, and the number of listings continue to drop, all indicating the market believes this project has long term potential

  • Most impactful trait categories:

    • Composition type, Palette

Our picks for best traits within categories:

    • We hate to say it, but this is a collection where there are no clear "bests". There is a price premium for the Composition Types Flock and Focal, with Flock being very rare (~2%). Different palettes also hold price premiums, notably Smoke and Fire and Vermillion Bird.

    Hidden traits:

    • Within each palette there are different backgrounds, which is not reflected in the metadata. Take a look at the bottom of this Deca gallery for our complete list.
    • There are many "emergent properties" where the images remind you of an object. We believe these are also collection opportunities, and if you scroll down you'll see a few of our favorites (please send us yours and we'll add them to this gallery!)
  • Aesthetics - The aesthetics of Archetype are absolutely fantastic. In particular, Golid is a master at combining color palettes and distributing them in a way that captivates the eye. This is where this collection stands above many others, and with 42 different color palettes Archetype clearly had an influence on the aesthetics on future works (e.g. Factura).

  • Artist - Golid is mysterious yet approachable at the same time, toeing the line between being available and helpful to his fans and collectors while still maintaining his privacy amongst his newfound fame. He is also clearly very involved in the generative art community and openly helps others and open sources his code. We believe his combination of availability and being true to his self is a wonderful mix and bodes well for the long-term.

  • Holders - There is a wide range of Archetype holders who are known to be well regarded and influential, including the well known DC Investor and FlamingoDAO amongst many others..

  • Sentiment - Archetype is widely considered a blue chip project and had a lot of attention early on, and deservedly so.

  • Collection breadth - Echoing some of the points on the aesthetics, Golid's use of 42 different palettes combined with the complex range of outputs from the algorithm results in a very broad collection that is still easily recognized as being unified within Archetype.

  • Historic significance - We believe this project will have historic significance. Some argue Archetype really popularized the

  • Price action - Price action has consistently been strong with huge booms during the "Artblocks Summer" of 2021 and finding a solid floor during the bear market of 2022.

  • The Algorithm: Archetype uses a simple principle - what happens if you take a rectangle and partition it multiple times in different ways? This rectangular partitioning is deceptively simple because it can result in a wide range of outputs.

    Most impactful trait categories:

    • Composition type, Palette

Our picks for best traits within categories:

    • Corner and Cube scene types

    Hidden traits:

    • Within each palette there are different backgrounds, which is not reflected in the metadata. Take a look at the bottom of this Deca gallery for our complete list.
    • There are many "emergent properties" where the images remind you of an object. We believe these are also collection opportunities, and if you scroll down you'll see a few of our favorites (please send us yours and we'll add them to this gallery!)

Stay with me here for a second - zoom out 100 years when the world is fully digitized and humans no longer need to work. We will have near infinite content and experiences to enjoy. The limiting factor is now our attention. Projects / items / assets that can hold our attention for ANY reason will continue to have demand. With assets like art, the demand with a fixed supply will lead to price increases. A passionate community will facilitate attention staying on a project, and therefore is a very important consideration.

Gazers have captured the community's attention in large part because of their leader, Matt Kane. Matt is very open in sharing his story. He oozes authenticity and a human element that wonderfully mixes with his raw technical skill. He put so much work and love into Gazers to make it this incredibly engaging and just impressive work of art. Additionally, he has left so many little secrets and Easter eggs in the collection, such as the Rocket trait described below. The community sees his devotion and feels his authenticity, and that in our humble opinion is why this collection, artist, and group is so special.

The Gazers community interacts on Discord similar to many other NFT projects, and it's free to join - discord.gg/gazers
